Speedway combines music, racing THE BATTALION Page 9A WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 0, 1976 \ diversified assemblage of coun- , rock, and boogie musicians will * ae up their instruments this ekend as the sound of motorcycles iping around the Texas World eedway track fades with the eve- ig light. The National Championship nale motorcycle race scheduled r Saturday and Sunday at the jeedway is the last of 54 season ices for the Western/Eastern loadracing Association. More than 50 bikes are expected to race, with Dine of them reaching speeds ap- iroaching 200 miles per hour (mph). Racing buffs can watch the heat md bracket races Saturday and the inals Sunday, but those who prefer he more melodious whine of a guitar H attend the Saturday night con cert for an advance ticket price of $10. The price covers admission to the motorcycle races Saturday and Sunday, and also admission to the concert Saturday night. The concert, which will be held in the infield, will feature such perfor mers as Ray Wylie Hubbard, a pro gressive country musician who has emerged as one of the leaders of the “redneck rock” movement in Texas. Hubbard, who has been playing in Texas for 12 years, captured the spirit of the movement in his song, “Redneck Mother,” which lauds pick-up trucks, beer-drinking and dear old mother. To follow up Hubbard’s perform ance, Grammy nominee Tracy Nel son will belt out some blues and soul numbers to complement the relaxed country atmosphere. On the a jazzier note the Texas- based Balcones Fault, recent visitors to Texas A&M, will satisfy the fun kier music lovers and let the concert-goers boogie. Augie Meyers and the Western Head Band, an Austin group that packs beer joints and dance halls across the state, plays rock, country, dixie, polka, blues and even jazz. The band has occassionally been known to take nostalgic trips back into the 50’s and 60’s music scene. Augie Meyers’ band will follow the opening act, the Silver City Sad dle Tramps from Austin, the group which in June brought 10,000 people to the Texas Speedway infield for a summer concert. Speedway manager George Mar tin advised those who like both rac ing and music to buy advance tick ets, since tickets are $12 at the gate. Martin said that the speedway will allow camping in the infield, and will build six bonfires to surround the crowd and warm the chilly night air. Martin said that he is excited about the concert/race idea and thinks the combination will work well. “It’s hard to describe the feelings generated at these concerts with the music, the bonfires, and the crowd cheering and all. I just hope the stu dents support it so we can do it again in the future,” he said. The affair is jointly sponsored by WTAW-FM in Collge Station-Bryan and the speedway. Advance tickets can be purchased from either spon sor. The Speedway is located just south of College Station on Highway 6. Associated Press DALLAS — The Washington Redskins, a living textbook on the art of survival, can earn a National Con ference wild card berth Sunday but they won’t catch the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys pulling any punches. “They’ve said a few things about me. . .1 know I’ll play hard,” says Cowboy quarterback Roger Staubach. The Cowboys have the best of all worlds going into the 3 p.m. Texas Stadium game Sunday. They’ve clinched the NFC title and can nail down a home play-off berth in the first round with a victory over the Redskins. Washington gets a National Con ference wild card if it can whip the Cowboys. Should Dallas win and St. Louis defeat the New York Giants then the Cardinals would be the wild card. “It galls me to have to do a favor for either one of them,” says fiesty safety Cliff Harris. Dallas is 11-2 and Washington is 9-4. The Cowboys ripped Washing ton 20-7 in their first meeting and the Redskins were all but written off . But Washington beat St. Louis twice and knocked off San Francisco on a critical road game. The Redskin defense has produced 44 “take aways” on 24 interceptions and 20 fumble recoveries while Billy Kilmer has completed 58 per cent. Professional football’s most ex perienced team also has added 39 quarterback sacks to its credentials and Washington special teamer Eddie Brown has a chance to break an NFL reoerd on punt returns. He has 606 yards and needs only 50 more steps to break Neal Colzie’s record.
