Legends of Texas folklore include scalp hunting, feuds The Texas A&M University Press turns to folklore for its newest publi cation, “Tales of the Big Bend” by Elton Miles. Eleven of the best tales from Texas’ most rugged region are in cluded in the 179-page book by Miles, an English professor at Sul Ross State University and former president of the Texas Folklore Soci ety. “Tales of the Big Bend” offers the first written account of the bloody history of scalp hunter John Glanton. Family feuds and gunfights domi nate the story of Fort Leaton, and a cowboy killing is the basis of the legend of “The Steer Branded Mur der.” The strike-it-rich tradition of the old West is enriched by the story of the Lost Haystack Mine. Mexican-American legends tell about the devil’s assault on the Big Bend and the miracles worked by an image of Christ. New versions are presented of the sad fates of Indian Emily and Dolores of Fort David who suffer or die for love. Chapters are also devoted to water witching and legendary Marfa Lights.
