At the Zone Tournament in Huntsville the Aggies, putting to gether perhaps their finest showing in A&M’s short history, twice de feated nationally ranked University of Houston in separate matches, as they stormed their way to the Zone Championship. To fully appreciate this outstand ing accomplishment, one must first consider the obstacles that A&M faced along the way. To begin with, out of the four different zones in Texas, A&M’s zone (East zone) is the toughest and strongest in the state. It includes the University of Hous ton, who has the distinction of being ranked third in the nation, and Lamar University, last year’s State champion. But the biggest obstacle the Ags faced, without a doubt, came in the 6’5” package of Flo Hyman, the Cougars’ star player. She, along with a couple of her U. of H. teammates, competed on the United States Olympic Volleyball team. Fortunately, however, obstacles William R. U. of H. and A&M came into the six team Zone Tournament seeded first and second, respectively, which enabled them both to receive byes in the first round of competition. A&M’s first match came in the second round against Lamar Univer sity. The Ags won easily 15-6, 15-12, thus gaining a berth in the final round of the winner’s bracket against U. of H. This match against U. of H. and the mighty Flo was not so easy. It proved to be a stuggle all the way with the Aggies prevailing 15-13, 16-14. Since this was the Cougars’ first loss in the double elimination tournament, they still remained in contention for the championship. The Cougars then defeated Lamar in the losers bracket, giving Lamar a third place finish in the tournament and U. of H. another shot at A&M in the finals. Beating U. of H. once in a tour nament is an incredible accom plishment, but doing it twice is ask ing the impossible. But apparently, no one told this to the Aggies. Looking as strong as ever, the Ags convincingly defeated the Cougars 15-9, 15-10 in the final match to cap- FIELD OF MEMBERSHIP FOR BRAZOS VALLEY SCHOOLS CREDIT UNION (formerly Tri-County Teachers Credit Union) Now Includes TAMU Students, Parents, Faculty & Staff Educational Loans Available 405 University East at McArthur St. 846-2904 Savings Insured to $40,000 TODAY’S CROSSWORD PUZZLE UNITED Feature Syndicate ACROSS 1 Accomplish ed quickly 6 Eve’s husband 10 Act of skill 14 Commercial ship 1 5 Companion less 16 10th century Russ, saint 1 7 Distentions 19 Stove chamber 20 The "P’’of “RCMP” 2 1 Abiding 23 Fire escapes 25 Congeal 26 Eyelid 50 Spoiled 52 Heavy beam 53 Educ. group 54 Wrong: Prefix 57 Strive 59 Caste 61 revenue 64 Click beetle 67 Play the leading role 68 Not regulated 70 Half of a sextet 71 Nick Charles’ wife 72 Surgical thread 73 Obnoxious people: Br. slang E F T S |P |l 1° It S Ia G A S F A I L R E N 0 A T O N E L I M I T IE Id C P Ip L A T E A R I E S e] L F A L A N T E D S I |L \L P O [o N S T L E ° I R E T A P E F R O L A V A R I D E R L A u D |P A I TJ S ]C U T S A T L A 5 N F V 1 E R L E T W E S T E R D i G E S T E X A M n| 0 S I E S T S L A P W A S E R R 0 R H 0 R A L S H o] R T R A C E A N I L E Tj O R O A T A N H E L M S S E e| D H E L D 9 Makes 41 Something disorderly that 10 Nourishment ensnares 11 Singer 43 Lost strength Presley 46 W.
