The women beat Austin 4-0, Galveston 14-0, and went on to defeat Houston in the finals 10-0 . Playing three games in two days with only seven veteran players, the women dominated the tournament shutting out each of their opponents. Player-coach Kathi Chappell said she was more than a little worried Saturday morming as the eight rookies took the field against the Austin Women’s Rugby team. The Aggie ruggers started slowly in an error-filled first half because more than half of the 15 woman squad was made up of players with only one game under their belts. “Normally the team has more vet erans playing but some of the girls couldn’t come because of money WHEN YOU BUY A CALCULATOR, THINK ABOUT WHO’S GOING TO TAKE CARE OF IT. The team is supported by donations and gets four cents a mile to pay for gasoline on road trips, she added. “The players have to buy their own uniforms, shoes, and pay for their meals and hotel rooms on out- of-town games,” Chappell said. The Saturday morning game against Austin was scoreless until late in the second half. The maroon team formed a shell around Norine Harris and pushed her across the goal line for the score. “We call that our power play,” Chappell said in describing the game winning try. The defense held Aus tin and the Aggie ruggers went on to win 4-0. Saturday afternoon the Aggies faced Galveston. Overcoming the weak start in the Austin game, the team from College Station caught fire in the second game. On the first play of the game Sandy Chandler scored on a 50 yard run. Jan Smalley put the ball be tween the uprights making the score 6-0. In rugby a player scores a try, worth four points, by crossing the goal and touching the ball to the ground. Following the try the team gets to kick for a two point conver sion from the ten yard line. Later in the first half, Mary Spidel, ’The Juice ’, ran like her namesake, O.J. Simpson, and scored another four points for the maroon. The final try was scored by Susan Stabler in the second half giving the Aggies 14 points while the defense held Galveston scoreless. “We completely dominated the game. We didn’t have any injuries or penalties,” Chappell said. Sunday afternoon Chappell and her ruggers met the Houston Boars for the championship game. Again the Aggies outmaneuvered and out ran their opponents showing the en durance that daily practice builds. Chappell said, “We practice every day while the other teams only prac tice twice a week. The opponents called several two minute time outs for players that were injured or sim ply tired, but the Aggies were always ready,” she added. Sandy Chandler and “The Juice” each scored again followed by one successful conversion by Jan Smal ley. - sv'•a®' i m Joyce Marquardt, of the Women’s Rugby team, carrieii ball for a short gain against Dallas.
