Rafael Hernandez-Colon was being honored. No one was injured in the blast. (FALN is an acronymn for a Spanish phrase meaning “Armed Forces of National Liberation of Puerto Rico.) A woman who identified herself as a member of FALN called the New York Post after the explosion last night to report the bombing, which she called a protest against Hernandez-Colon’s visit. Police said they later found a communique from FALN taped to a telephone in a booth one block from the hotel. Police Commissioner Michael Codd said contents of the note would be made public later today. FALN has been linked to about a dozen bombings in the last two years in the New York City area. A program called HITS (High Interest Teaching Systems) is bring ing the Top 40 into the classroom in the hope of motivating students whose reading skills are structurally weak. Compared with the traditional ways of learning the fundamentals of reading, it is little wonder the kids love HITS. Instead of sitting in a circle, await ing their turns to read aloud, HITS students make themselves comfort able, plug in their earphones and lis ten to a half-hour of their favorite Vaccine shortage may cau new poliomyelitis outbrea Associated Press At the beginning of each tape, a disc jockey introduces a song and in structs the students to follow along in their workbooks. They hear words already familiar to them, and see the words printed in their workbooks. As the students hear the words of their favorite songs, they learn how the words are put together. ATLANTA — Polio vaccine short ages are being reported by two state health departments because of a con tract disagreement between a fed eral agency and a vaccine supplier anxious to protect itself from possi ble lawsuits. An assistant secretary in the fed eral Department of Health, Educa tion and Welfare, Dr. Theodore Cooper, said in a recent memo, “I am fearful that curtailment of child hood immunization activities in a number of states may result in out breaks of the disease.’ Negotiations are at a stalemate be tween the CDC, which distributes vaccines to most states, and Lederle Laboratories, the principal supplier of the vaccine, a CDC spo^ pjpjL man, Betty Hooper, said \ A The company fears could arise from ] of the vaccine.
