Election Pet # Last name f By CASEY ZESCH Every mother has been conve niently equipped with enough rea sons to sufficiently argue that her children are far superior to other children. Though the wives of the Demo cratic and Republican presidential candidates have no plans to formally debate the issue of which one has the best children, both Rosalynn Carter and “First Mama” Betty Ford have touched on the issue through the mass media. The boasting, however, does not follow the traditional “my child’s better than your child” routine, but relies on a new “my child has less morals than your child motif. Mrs. Carter recently tried to numerically defeat the Republican first family by announcing that her three sons have tried marijuana. Poor Mrs. Ford has only one daugh ter who may have had an affair and one son who has smoked pot. To complicate matters, the Fords have a son who wants to be a minister Slouch by Jim Earle i 1 , — an unfortunate strike against the First Lady. But the Carters’ daugh ter proposes an equal drawback by being too young to have an affair. To make matters worse, she captured the hearts of television viewers dur ing the Democratic convention. So the score is hopelessly entang led, as are the minds of Americans who may look to national figures for guidance in moral affairs in addition to political affairs. The Ford and Carter children may certainly be “good kids,” and proba bly no harm will come to them as a result of their mothers’ statements. The harm comes to those who hear the bull session that should be kept between two mothers. I am writing this letter to inform those who don t understand because I am tired of being stared at when I am wheezing or using my medihaler. A medihaler is a little device I carry around to give me quick relief. It is like what you see in the commercials. To me it is no big deal when I use it, but many people look upon me as some sort of freak. I’m really just as human as the next person except that I have an uncomfortable allergy. I m used to it, and it is really a hassle to have more than anything else. So to you people who I am addressing this let ter to, give me a break. If you won der what I’m doing, don’t be afraid to ask, just please don’t stare. Name withheld by request It’s easier than you think Toi Voter registration can be a simple process, and completed by mail with the accompanying registration card. Some tips could make it even easier. The address listed on the card should be the Brazos County ad dress of the voter, not an out-of county home address. Also, be sure not to put a post office box number as a place of residence. The Brazos County tax assessor will not accept applications which list post office boxes as a place of residence. The social security number is not mandatory, but thevotei] must be sure to sign the card, A relation may register for a son, daughter, husband, wife, and so on, but he mustcirclewlial | his relation is and sign hisnamelo the card, not the nameofthepei son he is registering. If the ward proposition is upheld, Col lege Station will have to draw up its own voter registration rolls to correspond with the ward boundaries. The cost of this has been estimated to be $10,000. Judge Davis asked both lawyers to limit their briefs to several legal questions rather than rehashing statements made in yesterday’s testimony. Among the questions Davis suggested were: 1) would entire election be invali dated if one part were ruled invalid?; 2) would the absense of a directive to turn the page be a significant factor according to state law?; 3) is wording of the issue so misleading, confusing or ambiguous that the average voter could not understand how he was voting?; 4) did some people who wanted to vote for the charter change vote against it?; 5) did holding two elec tions (city and school with voting booth for each) in the same room affect the turnout on the charter change proposition in that if a person failed to find the proposition on one ballot, he might think it would be on the other ballot?; and 6) would a combina tion of any of these be enough to affect the tabidations on what was the will of the majority? Voter sign-up pushed Combating voter apathy may be the toughest battle fought in November’s general election, ac cording to information released from the state capitol. In an effort to reverse the declin ing number of registered Texas vot ers over the past decade, registration drives have begun throughout the state. Raymond Buchanan, Brazos County tax assessor, reported that less than 27 per cent of the voters registered in Brazos county are ex pected to vote in the presidential election, Nov. 2. “It’s hard to get up their (the vot ers’) enthusiasm to vote, even after they’ve registered,” Buchanan said. Buchanan is spearheading a drive in this area to register as many eligi ble voters as possible before the Oct. 1 deadline. The League of Women Voters will sign up voters this Friday and Satur day, Sept. 10-11. Members will spend Friday at Skaggs-Albertsons, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, they will be found at Food Town, 600 N. Main at 21st, in downtown Bryan from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Similar registrations will be held on the Texas A&M campus by the student government. Jerri Ward, vice president of external affairs, said the campus drive is tentatively set for Sept. 20-24. The voter fills out an application card and, within 30 days. receives a blue voter’s certificate. On Nov. 2, the certificate is pie sented at the polls of the precinclit which the voter lives. This is on the card itself. The certificate must be blue. il| other colors are outdated. If the card is lost, the voter sigcsi sworn statement that he has regie tered.
