If a*- — — — -tCMp anif say?4- — —■—Ly Texas A&M University’s new animal and food sciences center will be named in honor of the late Robert Justus Kleberg, Jr., longtime leader in world agriculture, business and philanthrophy and president and general manager of King Ranch for more than 38 years. Clyde H. Wells, chairman of the TAMU System’s Board of Regents, said board members approved the naming of the building now under construction at A&M’s West Cam pus, and set August 16 for the nam ing ceremony, in conjunction with the American Society of Animal Sci ence Conference at A&M. The multimillion dollar animal and food science center is a five-story structure that will accommodate the Animal Science Department, largest in the College of Agriculture, as well as the Poultry Science Department, plus food services related to meat and-daily products, Wells added. Kleberg, who became part of the management of King Ranch about 1919, then served as president and general manager of the ranch from the time it became a family-owned corporation in 1935 until his death in 1974. “He directed King Ranch opera tions into a worldwide corporation, and provided both tangible support and encouragement throughout the years to Texas A&M. King Ranch provided animals, land resources, and funds for research in animal nu trition, grasses, meats, biochemis try, and animal genetics. As chair man of the Caesar Klegerg Wildlife Foundation, Mr. Kleberg was prin cipally responsible for a significant grant to the Texas Agricultural Ex periment Station for worldwide wildlife research. “Research funds and other major contributions have come to the Texas A&M University Systraj result of Mr. Kleberg’s inteil A&M programs, Wells said.
