I I I I— I—>/“\ I I /^L_l Wl ^ WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1976 Tivo JC pitchers sign with Texas Texas A&M Baseball Coach Tom Chandler has announced the sign ing of two junior college pitchers, both from Panola Junior College in Carthage. Right hander David Pieczynski and left hander James McWilliams will join the Aggies’ staff next spring. The pair bring with them excellent credentials from Panola. Piecyznski was 9-2 with an 0.63 earned run average. He had 55 strikeouts in 56 innings of work. McWilliams was 16-2 with an 0.53 earned run average and had 89 strikeouts in 80 innings. Piecyznski played his prep ball at Richardson Pearce while McWilliams starred for Hurst Bell. Joining this pair will be Marty Green, a left hander from North west High School in Fort Worth. Texas A&M also signed five women athletes recently, including two track champions and an all-state basketball player. Clear Lake’s Sande Lambert was the winner of the Class AAAA long WED., THURS., FRI., SAT. jump with a leap of 18-8 1/2 feet and was fourth in the 80-yard hurdles in 10.8 seconds. Iris Tipton from Cisco won the Class AA discus with a 123-0 foot effort while placing sec ond in the shot put with 42-8 3/4 feet. High jumper Jan Chesbro and sprinter Jul ie White will also be coming to A&M. Chesbro won the AAA high jump in 1975 with a 5-7 foot jump while White was sixth in the 60-yard dash in 1974. To the women’s basketball team will come 5-11 center Susan Kim- bro. Kimbro averaged 26 points a game in leading her high school team to the state tournament. She will play in the North-South All-Star game scheduled for July. The men’s basketball team, de fending champions of the Southwest Conference for the past two sea sons, has concluded its recruiting. Coach Shelby Metcalf’s staff has secured several talented names to add to those already on the team. John Schlicher, who missed last sea son due to an accident which oc curred while on a recruiting visit at A&M, was amongst the signees. Also signed were 6-4 freshman Steve Sylestine from Clear Lake, 6-5 freshman Sonny Hammond from Miami, Fla., 5-10 freshman Dave Goff from Homewood, Ill., .and 6-10 freshman Doug Pederson from Prior Lake, Minn. Transfer ring from Garden City Junior Col lege in Garden City/Kan. is 6-4 1/2 junior Keith Carter Youngstown, Ohio. Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, which has produced such Aggie stars as Steve Jones and Barry Davis, offers another prospect in 6-6 junior Willie Foreman. The Texas A&M track team has also been on the recruiting road as of late and head coach Charlie Thomas appears to have signed some top prospects. The Aggies have nabbed Houston Sterling s brotherly duo of Kent and Karl Figgs. Kent, was named to the all-state team in both hurdles events while Karl competes in the half mile. Also signing was the state’s top half miler, Mark Gauger from Spring Branch. Teammate Sam Cas tro follows in Gauger’s steps to Ag- gieland and Thomas hopes to use him in the sprints. Fort Worth Richland’s Tim Scott, also named to the all-state track team, has also inked with A&M. Doug Pederson irger i Scott competes in both the shot and discus. Another Sterling product, long jumper Reggie Jameson, will join Thomas’ team in that event as well as the sprints. Thomas also has his eyes on jave lin thrower Mike Newsome from New Mexico and Brad Burris, a pole vaulter who has cleared 15-0 feet and has run 14.1 in the high hur dles. High jumper Lynn Byrd, won the Southwest Conference!) freshman year at A&M, is expect )gi to return to A&M after missing year while attending'a juniordl lege.
