Page 4 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, APR. 20, 1976 Awards featured Events fill Parents’ Day Easter Sunday was Parents’ Day at Texas A&M University, and an awards day for students. standards, military proficiency, im provement, leadership and partici pation in campus activities. “This is a great event in the academic year,” said A&M Presi dent Jack Williams. “It’s also one of the many activities planned and car ried through entirely by students. The festivities started at 7:30 a.m. in the Corps dorm area with a flower-pinning ceremony. The “Aggie Parents of the Year award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Walker Jr. of Houston at the Parents Day pro gram. The program was held in Rudder Auditorium, and included the presentation of Corps of Cadets awards based on academic The Thomas S. Gathright Academic Excellence Award was presented to individuals from each class and college with the highest grade point ratio. Frederick Earl Wilson, a senior in the College of Science, led the field with a 4.0982 average. A 4.0 represents straight A s. Wilson surpassed perfection with physical education grade points. The Ross Volunteers performed in Kyle Field, and were followed by the Corps Review and an exhibition by the Fish Drill Team. Parsons Mounted Cavalry exe cuted a fancy drill exhibition on the Main Parade Field. An Easter Service was held in the All Faiths Chapel, and included an invocation by Capt. Ira Orr, special music by Student Body President Fred McClure, and dismissal by Col. Logan Weston. The Aggie Stage Band, under di rection of Maj. Joe T. Haney, gave a concert in Rudder Auditorium, fol lowed by the Ross Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Rudder Forum. Parents’ Day concluded with the Student Senate Awards program in the Memorial Student Center at 5:30 p.m. Recipients of the various awards presented during the day are listed separately. Walker Jr. of Houston as part of the Parents Day program Sunday at Texas A&M University. Parents of three A&M students and seven more who plan to be, the Walkers were presented an Aggie rose corsage and a plaque by Missie Miller, chairman of the Student Government Parents of the Year Committee. Miller applauded the Walkers for the “support, encour agement and love they have shown. The Walkers were chosen from 21 nominated couples by a committee of A&M students. They succeed Mr. and Mrs. James M. Singleton III of College Station as Parents of the Year. Watching the proceedings were John Henry III, a senior animal sci ence major; Tammy, sophomore in chemical engineering; Connie, freshman physical education major, and the other Walker children, Be cky, Chris, Michael, Patrick, Tommy, Cindy, and Colette. “Gig-’Em,” was among the first words learned by 4-year-old Colette.
