Housing problem shared by schools There is an on-campus housing shortage at other campuses as well as at Texas A&M. Like A&M, the two schools listed here have no immediate plans for the construction of new dorms. The following are current and approximate figures. In addition to dorms, both A&M and the University of Texas pro vide housing for married students. At Texas Tech, freshmen and sophmores are required to live on campus. The University of Texas has a total enroll ment of 39,923 while Texas Tech students number about 20,000. Texas A&M has a current enrollment of 24,383. The university is undertaking a five-year program for renovating many of the older dorms, most of which were built in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The oldest, Milner Hall, was built in 1911 at a cost of $75,000. Milner will be converted into an office building later this year at a cost of about $1 million. Davis said the proposed overall renova tion plan calls for expenditures of $1.55 million over the next five years to repair roofs, repaint halls and rooms and replace worn-out carpeting and floor tiles. University-owned housing for married students is available for rents ranging from $60 a month for an unfurnished apartment in the Old College View complex to $154 a month for a two-bedroom furnished apartment on College Avenue. As of March 2, there were 13 vacancies of the 908 available units in the five com plexes: Southside, College Avenue, Hen- sel, Old College View and the new brick College View. Unlike most other area apartment complexes, married students are not required to sign a lease agreement for a specific period of time. But they must give at least 30 days notice before vacating the unit. A $60 deposit is required of each unit which is returned to the tenant, including interest, at the time of vacating the unit. The rent includes utilities for all apart ments except for the Hensel complex, where tenants have the option of renting an air-conditioner for $7.50 a month, plus electrical bills. Special tax break given if income below $8,000 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, MAR. 23, 1976 Page People with an earned income of less than $8,000 can receive a special payment from the federal govern ment if they file a 1975 income - tax return. An economist with the Texas Ag ricultural Extension Service, Dr. Wayne Hayenga said that many people who are eligible for the pay ment, called “Earned Income Cre dit,” may not usually be required to file a tax return because of their low earnings. To be eligible for this tax ci'edit an individual must have less than $8,000 in earned income, including income from wages, salaries, tips or other employe compensation and self-employment income. Workers must have maintained a home in the Political strategy simple: survive Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. — For Ronald Reagan and George C. Wallace, to day’s political strategy is simple: sur vive. Republican Reagan and Democrat Wallace find themselves in the same campaign quandary. They are in Southern, normally conservative, territory that once seemed politically hospitable—and yet they are braced for defeat. In measuring the impact of the North Carolina presidential primary election, the lot of the losers will be the key. President Ford said in advance that he expected to win today’s elec tion, which would be his sixth in a row. Anything less would be a seri ous setback for the Ford campaign and a major lift that would give new life to Reagan’s Republican chal lenge. Reagan now is forced to deal al most hourly with the suggestion that he may be quitting the race. He de nies it. Embrey’s Jewelry We Specialize In Aggie Rings. In the Democratic primary, former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter was the favorite to win his third in a row over Wallace. Momentum is a key to the Carter campaign, particu larly as he heads into New York, where Sen. Henry M. Jackson of Washington is rated the likely leader in a primary two weeks from today. So Carter needs the win. A Wal lace upset would stall him at a crucial point, as the primary competition shifts to big. Northern industrial states. United States for the entire tax year for themselves and at least one de pendent child who was under 19 or a full-time student. Those qualifying for the credit and who earned $4,000 or less receive a credit of 10 per cent of their earned income up to a maximum of $400, Hayenga said. People with incomes between $4,000 and $8,000 have the amount of credit decreased $1 for every $10 of income over $4,000. Taxpayers who filed a tax return last year will find additional informa tion on earned income credit in the tax packages they received for filing their 1975 returns.
