It’s not that he thinks Benny, 33, would make a lousy sheriff’. In fact, it’s just the contrary. The problem is that Johnny him self had jumped into the same sheriff s race a few days earlier as a Democrat. “I don’t think either one thought the other was serious, liut they both were,’ said an acquaintance of the two Hunt County candidates. Since Benny is unopposed in the Republican primary, the two would clash head-on in the general election if Johnny is chosen as the Democra tic nominee. He’s got six opponents, including the incumbent. “We got our wires crossed,” grumbled Johnny, “and it really shocked me. To tell you the truth, I didn’t think Benny would run on a Republican ticket. “I sure wouldn’t. ’’ Responded Benny, “Most of the time I do vote Republican, but I vote for the individual, the man I think can do the best job. And that’s the way it should be.’ Both are launching maiden runs for elective office and while disclaim ing any animosity, they lioth say they are deadly serious about winning. “We just came up wanting the same job,” said Benny, who for the last 12 years has worked for an international electronics firm in Greenville, al though living in Wolfe City. “I just don’t jump into things hur riedly,” he said. “I’ve thought about it. I want it. I’m after it. I’ve got the desire and I’ll get it. “I’ll do everything I can to win.” Johnny is just as adamant, just as confident, although his campaign ef forts are presently hampered by the finishing touches on a law enforce ment degree he’s getting at East Texas State University. He drives daily to classes at Com merce, six miles from his home in Campbell, just north of here, and also operates a beer parlor there. “It’s the only way I could finish school, and it was either that or wel fare,” he quipped. As a former patrolman, deputy sheriff, security guard and military policeman, Johnny is the candidate of experience. He is married and has four children. Benny, father of two young teen agers, claims his long suit is his longtime friendship with the people of the East Texas county: “They know me and they’ll vote for me.” The candidates father, Johnny Richards Sr., an assistant manager of a Greenville western wear shop, first said he’d flip a coin before casting his vote. But he later concluded that Johnny, as the elder, would get his vote, although “to me, either one would be a do-right sheriff for this county. ” Said Benny: “It’s going to be head-to-head if Johnny wins in the primary. There’ll be no quitting. It won’t he a picnic for anyone.” Mazowsze Polish Song and Dance Company Page 5 I “BETTER THAN EVER!” — Kisselgotf. N.Y. She was released after posting a $22,500 bond. Former State Rep. Oscar Carrillo, bitterly complained about the hand cuffing of his 80-year-old father, D.C. Chapa. He said his father, his brother Ramiro, and the former judge came to the Duval County sheriff's off ice here from their homes in Benavides and notified the Ran- . gers where they were. “He is an 80-year-old man and they tied him down like an ordinary criminal,” Carillo said. Texas Rangers Capt. John Wood said it is normal procedure for Ran gers to handcuff a person arrested on a felony charge. The grand jury returned the in dictments after working for four days with members of the Texas Attorney General’s staff, several Texas Ran gers and Department of Public Safety intelligence officers. Texas Atty. Gen. John Hill per sonally presented some of the cases to the grand jury here Feb. 2. Hill sent a task force to Duval County about a year ago at the request of Dist. Atty. Arnulfo Guerra after Guerra said he was starting an inves tigation to “clean up Duval County. Babi£ was sold Mom robs to buy child Associated Press HOUSTON — A Houston woman sold her infant son for $1,600, then decided she wanted him again and went on a robbery spree in an effort to raise the money to buy him back. Sherry Alton, 19, and her common law husband, Ray Martinez, 21, pleaded Wednesday for the return of their son in separate interviews with the Houston Post. Both are being held in the city jail on charges of aggravated robbery after they were arrested Sunday along with another couple in connec tion with several robberies in the Houston area. Miss Alton said she sold her son, Ricky Martinez, 18 months, because she needed the money and did not tell her husband for about two weeks when she decided she wanted Ricky back. “I needed themoney for rent, ” she said in the interview with the Post. “I had a little bit of a habit (heroin) and I needed money to live on or I would have never done anything like this,” she said. Martinez said he was shocked by the news. “I love my baby more than any thing in the world,” he said. “I just want my baby back. I can’t stand se eing somebody else with my baby.” He said the couple was separated when the sale was made. Miss Alton said the manager of an apartment complex arranged for the sale prior to last Christmas. She said she was later told she could get Ricky back if she would give back the $1,600. “That’s why we were doing all these hijackings and robberies,” she said in the interview. “I had never committed a crime before.” Lt. A. J. Contreras of the Juvenile Division said there is no law against the natural mother of a child selling her baby nor is there a law against buying one. Contreras said the loca tion of the baby was unknown.
