Vasovski, who retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1971, said he’s fortunate to be at A&M today. In 1939, Soviet forces captured Vasovski, who was then an officer in the Polish army. They turned him over to the Germans, who put him in a prisoner of war (POW) camp in Murnau, Germany. He was transferred to the Allied POW Surgical Hospital in Siegburg in 1941. While at this hospital, Vas ovski worked to gain better condi tions for American prisoners of war. He became senior medical orderly in the hospital in 1943 and for the next two years he was the main con tact between American prisoners and prison authorities. Vasovski negotiated for better food, shelter and medical attention. Worth television weatherman Ron Godbey will at tempt to unseat Teague for the Democratic nomination. Nigliazzo was defeated by Teague in the 1974 Congressional election. Mowery, 49, who termed himself a “strict constitutionalist,” said the federal government should not be doing everything for everybody. He said, “We need to take on the bureaucratic system; cut it, slap it, dismantle it, whatever it takes to cut the costs of government and get san ity in spending. ” A former mayor of Village, Texas, he said he supports a strong military power for the United States. He also backs a policy of doing away with deficit spending. “Inflation is the crudest tax of all, ” Mowery said, “hurting the poor and those on fixed incomes.” Mowery’s wife, Anna, is the chairman of the Tarrant County Re publican Party. He maintained underground con tact with other camps for resistance and information purposes. He was also instrumental in organizing es cape groups. It was Vasovski who managed the successful escape of two American prisoners who later, in 1945, advised advancing American forces of the camp’s location. These humanitarian actions and the efforts of many of Vasovski’s pa tients enabled him to immigrate to the United States. He was admitted in 1949 and naturalized in 1953. He entered the U.S. Air Force in Sep tember 1949. When he thought about register ing at A&M, Vasovski said, “I had some reservations (about registering at A&M) at first, but I went through the whole rigamarole. ” Vasovski says that his grades are irrelevant. “I will do what I have to do, I don’t like to be a failure.” He lives a very organized life, stemming from more than 35 years of military service. Vasovski says he has no problem finding time to study. The only complaint of his study habits came from Mrs. Vasovski. “At a quarter till two he comes into the bed with cold feet.” Vasovski lives at 214 W. North Ave. with his wife, Ingeborg, who works at the Beutel Health Center. They have three boys, Frank, Thomas and Daniel. As an example of the appar ent freedom and openness of elec tions this year, Meek added: “We’ve got some people running for county judge who don’t have enough sense to run their own household. ” For most of this century, candi dates were hand picked and ran without serious opposition L were first selected by latesta-jj., Archie Parr, the first “D* Duval, then by his son,: r 1 !^ George B.
