Page 8 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, JAN. 29, 1976 ‘Athletes should grow up’ SMU’s Meyer presents best image Associated Press HOUSTON — Prospective high school athletes looking for a soft four-year scholarship with fringe benefits won t enjoy the recruiting pitch from Ron Meyer, Southern Methodist University s straightfor ward new head football coach. “Many high school athletes are spoiled,” said Meyer, named last week to replace Dave Smith. “I’m not going to run a pro football camp. I hope they don’t expect that. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) didn’t accuse the Mustangs of running a pro foot ball camp, but they did place the school on two years probation, which expired Jan. 7, for rules violations, one involving monetary rewards to players for performance. SMU Athletic Director Dick IF YOU’VE GOT THE TIME, WE’VE GOT THE BEER. Davis told the Houston Sports Writ ers and Sportscasters Association Tuesday he hired Meyer to change the Ponies’ image both on and off the field. Meyer, here with Davis on an ac- cellerated recruiting run, wasted lit tle time in trying to start the image change. “Some of these athletes (high school recruits) are just coddled,” said Meyer, who led Nevada-Las Vegas to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1974. “We’ve created our own monster and I just don’t believe in it. For Americans, meanwhile, there is little cause for optimism about the Alpine skiing team which will carry United States’ hopes in the Games that open here a week from today. Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark, 19, who leads this season’s World Cup standings with 191 points, and Italy’s Gustavo Thoeni, winner of the giant slalom at the 1972 Winter Games, finished one-two in Tuesday’s final Olympic tuneup: a giant slalom in Zweisel, West Germany. Stenmark, who won his fourth World Cup victory of the season, Thoeni and another Italian, Piero Gros, are ranked one-two-three in the over-all standings and all are given good chances of winning med als in the two Olympic slalom events — giant and special. The fourth-ranked World Cupper is Austria’s Franz Klammer, a dow nhill specialist whose season-leading five victories make him a strong fa vorite in the third of the three Alpine skiing events for men. Then there’s the United States team. In Zweisel, seven of the eight men who comprise the Alpine Olympic squad finished the race, led by a ninth-place showing from Steve Maine, 18, of White Pass, Wash. It was the first time he has finished in the top 10 in a World Cup race — you get points only for the top 10 — and he earned his first two points. JAN. AND FEB. University Dr. College Station - 846-1729 “I’ll help in every way I can but I’m tired of taking the responsibility for making some athletes grow up. “Some blue chip athletes are being spoiled right out of playing football,” Meyer said, referring to preferential treatment and induce ments. “I’m going to present the best image I can to these athletes but I’m not going to beg them to play. “Not all athletes are spoiled. We ve created a monster here and it’s up to us to get it straightened out, or somebody will do it for us. The NCAA last week added another year to SMU’s probation for further rules violations but the additional year does not prohibit SMU from playing in television or bowl games. Meyer, who SMU officials hope will start a new era free of trouble with the NCAA, says there need to cheat in recruiting. “I don’t want some athlete coming in and telling me he’s going to blow the whistle on me, Meyer said. “There’s no doubt we can recruit without cheating. I think it turns a lot of prospects off. Davis said the new SMU coach had to be a man to change the school’s image. “Why should we try to play the same type of football as Texas or Arkansas, ” Davis said. “We tried to pick a man who throws the football. ’ And if Meyer throwing the football fails, the Mustangs still have Ricky Wesson another season.
