By TONY GALLUCCI Battalion Staff Writer Qbc) INTERSTATE Sonny Parker has been named the Southwest Conference Player of the Week after outstanding perform ances last week against Houston and Arkansas. Known as Sonny P to friends and fans, Parker was over whelming in leading the Ags over UH with 22 points and ten rebounds. He then bettered the performance in a close but losing effort to Arkansas. Longhorns get chance for revenge By TONY GALLUCCI Battalion Staff Writer The Aggies venture into Austin tonight to test the mettle of the 1976 edition of Leon Black’s Longhorn basketball team. Aggie Head Coach Shelby Metcalf stated after the Rice game that, “I’m glad we re playing Texas in Austin. If these guys are true Aggies we won’t have any trouble.” Despite Metcalf s dislike of com paring basketball to football, if the Longhorns are true Longhorns they’ll be remembering the day after Thanksgiving and for the first time in a while they have a motive for ven geance. Either the Longhorns were look ing ahead or perhaps they have been experiencing trouble winning as they dropped their game against TCU Monday night in Ft. Worth, 73-70. Sonny P scored 34 points and again picked up ten rebounds in the battle in the hills. Prior to the Rice game on Monday night, Parker was the fourth leading scorer in die conference with his 20.4 points for the year. He has aver aged 20.9 points in his six conference starts this year. Parker leads the team so far this year in scoring, conference scoring, field goal percentage, assists, SWC assists, turnovers, SWC turnovers, steals and SWC steals. He also has the high-point game for the team this season, scoring 39 points against Houston Baptist in the Bluebonnet Tournament in Houston, in which the Aggies placed third. Sonny P was named the Most Valuable Player in the tourney. Parker has scored in double fig ures in 14 games and over 20 points in nine games. He has rebounded in double figures in six games. Called by Aggie head coach Shelby Metcalf, “The best player I’ve seen in the conference in a long while, ’ Sonny P has the stats to boost that. Sonny came to A&M last year as a transfer from Mineral Area Junior College in Flatonia, Missouri. He had graduated from Chicago Far- ragut High where he was team co captain, all-section and all-state under coach Wardell Vaughn. InJC, he was twice All-America, and was the leading scorer and Player-of- the-Year both years. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the na tional Junior College tourney. In his first year as an Aggie he led all scorers with a 14.7 ppg average and was also second in rebounding at 5.9 per game, helping the Aggies to their first SWC championship since 1970. For his efforts, last year he was named to the first team All-SWC by unanimous vote of the polls. He was also named the SWC’s most valuable player and the Associated Press’ Newcomer of the Year. He also was named to the Associated Press’ All- District VI team encompassing the SWC and other Southwest Area major college teams. Sonny P hasn’t gotten his due on All-America teams according to some observers, but his chances in crease weekly as he leads the Aggies to perhaps their second SWC cham pionship in a row. If he doesn’t get his due recognition with another, the pro scouts will be happier. They al ready know P’s around.
