Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, DEC. 3, 1975 Seek second win Aggies face Bobcats tonight TYPING The defending Southwest Confer ence champions will put the freshly acquired 1-0 record on the line to night as the Southwest Texas State Bobcats invade G. Rollie White Col iseum. The Aggies are just off a convinc ing 115-64 win over Wayland Bap tist, a game in which six of the A&M cagers scored in double figures. With a blend of experience and youth, the Aggies combined an effec tive pressure defense and a highpo- wered offense in knocking off the Pioneers. Head Basketball Coach Shelby Metcalf lauded the play of his freshmen, commenting that they had four great examples to follow in seniors Barry Davis, Sonny Parker, Ray Roberts and Gates Erwin. The Bobcats of Coach Vernon McDonald are off a 17-10 season and return seven lettermen. Assistant Coach Bob Gobin says the South west Texas squad will be a tougher opponent than Wayland. They have a little more experience. They’re a little bigger and they have some bet ter caliber players,” he said. In their rout of Wayland, the Ag gies fell just two baskets short of tying the school record for scoring in a single game. Davis led the A&M assault with 20 points and Roberts followed with 19. As was the case last season, Davis has taken an early lead in the A&M rebounding department with ten caroms. Tonight’s contest is the second in a four-game homestand for the Aggies. Houston Baptist will come in Satur day night, followed by Sam Houston State on Tuesday, Dec. 9. A&M’s first road trip will take them to Lawr ence, Kan. for the Jayhawk Classic. The Aggie lineup should stay the same as the season opener with Davis at the high post and Wally Swanson at the low post. Parker and freshman Karl Godine will be at the guard spots while Roberts and Jarvis Williams fill the forward slots. SPECIAL RATES Academic & Professional I CALL OR COME BY W.T.A. Staff photo by Steve Gobel Oiler hopes dashed by Cincinnati Associated Press HOUSTON —- Houston Oilers Coach O. A. “Bum” Phillips said Monday it took him until halftime of Sunday’s 23-19 loss to Cincinnati to realize how much a loss to Pittsburgh six days earlier had taken out of his team. The back-to-back losses all but eliminated the Oilers from playoff consideration with a 7-4 record and cooled down the torrid American Football Conference’s Central Divi sion race. “We are a team that plays on emo tion,” Phillips said. “We really wanted to beat Pittsburgh. I didn’t realize losing to them had taken so much out of us until halftime. ” After falling behind 16-3 at the half, the Oilers rallied in the final two quarters but couldn’t overcome sub stitute Bengal quarterback John Reaves or a game long rain. “We didn’t play our best until the fourth quarter,” Phillips said. “That’s the way we’ve played all year. We played our best when we had to have something. Cincinnati threw the ball real well, and they caught it. We didn’t. Pittsburgh, 10-1, and Cincinnati, 9-2, now rank ahead of the Oilers in the Central Division. Houston could only have a chance for a wild card berth if it wins against San F rancisco, Oakland and San Diego in its last three games and Cincinnati loses its last three against Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Diego . . “At least we can say that so far the only teams to beat us have a com bined 19-3 record,” Phillips said. Houston’s four losses have been to the Bengals and Steelers. Houston lost two starters during the game, running back Fred Willis and offensive tackle Elbert Drungo.
