My girlfriend and I believe that **v she is pregnant. I love her and she » loves me, but it just isn’t possible for us to get married until I finish » school. I am a sophomore. What || should I do? ] A. Initially, find out if your girlfriend is in fact pregnant. This can be done minister to her. It is not necessary to explain to anyone the circumstances behind the test request. Secondly, you should decide answers to these questions if she is pregnant: 1.) Do you believe in abor tion? 2.) Why can’t you get married? 3.) If you could get married, would you? 4.) Do you know what it is like to be a child of an unwed mother? 5.) Would you want your child to grow up without a father? 6.) There are so many situational variables that it is hard to provide extensive advice in a column of this sort. Do not delay in acting on it. If you can tell one or more of your parents, it would probably ease the tension and reduce some of the anxiety. Q. I have asked a guy who I like quite a bit to take me to the senior Embrey’s Jewelry We Specialize In Aggie Rings. Although I have asked him several times, he keeps saying that he doesn’t like to plan ahead and will let me know. I have dated him before but I don’t know if he likes me. Whenever ask ing me for a date he always waits until the last minute. How long should I wait for him to respond? A. You can determine how long to wait by determining how bad you want to go out with this guy. If you would rather go with him than any one else, then it seems logical that you should wait until after the dance before giving up. You should decide if your real de sire is to go to the dance with the guy or just to go to the dance. If it is the guy you are after, try asking him to make a decision and explain that he should decide out of courtesy to you since you would like to make other plans should he decide not to go. If you are interested in just going to the dance, and the individual who takes you isn’t important, try asking some of your other friends, but don’t do this until you have told the first guy that if he doesn’t decide then the offer is terminated. If you are wondering whether or not the guy likes you, why not ask him? If he does, he might like the opportunity to say so and if he doesn’t, you’ll probably find out in some way after you ask him. Consider that the fellow’s person ality may include waiting until the last minute. If this is a personality trait, you might just have to wait and see what happens. How do you catch it? What is it? How long does it take to get well? There is a fair amount of infectious mononucleosis (a viral injection) on the campus. It is transmitted, like so many viral infections, by direct or intimate contact such as kissing, etc. and by airborn spread in a similar way to that - which colds are spread. There are three phases to the disease: 1). Prodromal or early symptoms (few days) — primarily general malaise, slight sore throat, low grade fever; 2) Acute phase — (1-2 weeks) - fever, severe sore throat, general lethargy malaise, markedly enlarged lymph nodes in neck (“bull neck”); 3) Convalescent phase — above symptoms diminishing over period of several weeks to several months. Were there many bonfire injuries? Considering the increased numbers of students working on the bon fire, there have been relative few injuries — fewer still serious ones. By far the majority of “injuries’ were related to poison ivy! Very little can be done about that. First aid measures by students themselves were very effective — to say nothing of the safety measures which prevented many injuries. Is there a flu epidemic on campus? Everyone seems to be sick with something tagged “flu”. There is a “flu epidemic” of sorts on the campus. There is some true influenza, but there is much more of various viral infections (upper respiratory, gastro-intestinal, etc.) which are labeled “flu”. Fortu nately, these are relatively short-lived — 24-48 hours duration. Ragsdale project supports blacks By JOHN W. TYNES Battalion Staff Writer The “East Texas Project,” de signed to help blacks acquire more public offices in East Texas, was explained by Texas state Rep. Paul Ragsdale in Rudder Tower on Tues day. Ragsdale, now in his second term in the Texas House, was sponsored by the Black Awareness Committee. Ragsdale said that many East Texas counties have a 30 or 40 per cent black population yet have never had a black elected to a county office. His “East Texas Project” is trying to remedy this by filing suit against counties that have diluted the black vote by gerrymandering voting dis tricts. Ragsdale and his staff have already won several such cases and have sev eral more in the courts. When a suit is won, the counties are forced to re-apportion districts to provide equal representation for blacks. The most effective way to acquire more black rights, Ragsdale said, is through politics. He has spent most of his efforts in the legislature toward developing black political power. He said that “society must be changed to accommodate the acquisition of rights so long denied. ” After his speech, Ragsdale answered questions from a 25- person audience composed of equal numbers of blacks and whites. Ragsdale said that he did not think blacks would begin to attend large, predominantly white universities like A&M. He claims that there is still quite a bit of alienation and dis crimination toward blacks in mainly white schools. He also said that predominantly black branches of major state univer sities are often neglected financially. He conceded that black colleges have been receiving increases in fi nancial aid but he claimed that this is because of an increase in the number of blacks in the Texas legislature. Ragsdale refused to take a stand on busing to achieve integration. He claimed that he was not knowledge able enough on the subject to make an authoritative statement. He said he preferred to leave the problem to experts rather than take a stand that might prove wrong for his con stituents. !: '(Price based on 5 day/4 night low season package to Breckenridge, per person double occupancy, gas, taxes and air fare extra.)
