ft Page 8 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, NOV. 20, 1975 SMU Ponies put hopes on Terrell, new recruits By DAVID WALKER Battalion Sports Editor A new face and an old familiar one will be the keys to the 1975-76 SMU Mustang basketball squad that some experts expect to take the South west Conference title. Under the direction of first-year coach Sonny Allen, the Mustangs welcome back All-SWC center Ira Terrell after a year’s absence. Ter rell was declared ineligible by the NCAA after his sophomore year, but the decision was later reversed to allow the Dallas Roosevelt star to return for his senior season. Allen comes to SMU from Old Dominion where he was noted for his fast-break teams, a dimension he plans on installing at SMU. "Our team speed is average, but average isn’t good enough to win a championship or to even run a fast break,’’ Allen said. “We have some good players at SMU, but I don’t know if the fast break is going to work. I’m going to try it, but if it doesn’t work I’ll have to go to something else.’’ Although Allen isn’t too familiar with the SWC, he knows enough about the league to view his team’s chances this year. “I think we’ll bat tle for the championship. With the type of players we have I don’t think anyone will dominate us. “The conference doesn’t have a good reputation throughout the na tion, but it isn’t as bad as most pe ople think, I’m looking forward to the season,” Allen said. Allen will have six returning let- termen to work with, including Ter rell. Three of the six started for last year’s 8-18 Ponies. Jeff Swanson leads the returnees as he was one of the leading Pony scorers with a 11.3 per game aver age. The 6-6 sophomore was the second-leading rebounder on the team. Also back is senior Mike Jac- car who started the last half of the season as the Pony field general. Jaccar hit 8.2 points per game. Joe Swedlund is the other re turnee who started last season. He averaged 10.7 points per game and is only a sophomore. The Ponies did well in the recruit ing wars last year, going the route that the Aggies took, signing only freshmen and no junior college transfers. Two signees, 5-11 Mike Ander son, from Ada, Oklahoma, and 6-0 Ernest Nixon, from New York, are expected to battle Jaccar for the Pony point guard spot. Other recruits include 6-2 Butch Bostic, also from New York, 6-6 An thony Garner from Markham, Il linois, 6-8 Tom Somerville from Dallas and 6-6 Roy Streed from Chi cago. But the big man in the Mustang camp is Ira Terrell. “Ira is a super player. He’s dominated every in trasquad game we’ve had so far,” Allen said. “He’s one of the best around and I don’t think that anyone will doubt that. Allen agrees that the cham pionship hopes of the Mustangs rests on the shoulders of the big man they call “I.T. ” “I can’t think of any better shoulders to rest on than those,” he said. Akins’ still listed as doubtful for Ag game Associated Press Coach Darrell Royal of Texas told Longhorn Club members We dnesday he knew nothing more than what they had read in the ne wspaper about quarterback Marty Akins’ knee injury. “I can’t look inside the knee,” Royal said. He added, however, that Akins, the key to sixth-ranked Texas’ Wishbone-T offense, “is barely wa lking and that, to me, is a bad sign. ” The Austin American-Statesman quoted trainer Frank Medina We dnesday as saying Akins would not be able to do the weight exercises he is doing “if the knee was hurt.” “I’ve examined the knee,” Me dina said. “He couldn’t have a more stable knee. ” Akins limped off in the first qu arter of last Saturday’s 27-11 victory over winless Texas Christian, and team doctors diagnosed the injury as a sprained right knee. Royal said, however, of several in jured Longhorn players “the most doubtful for the Texas A&M game is Marty.” Royal narrated films of the TCU game, calling it “one of the sloppiest games you’ll ever want to see. ” Royal also disclosed that just after Texas took a 14-0 lead in that game, he told assistant Don Breaux he was “really concerned because it’s all coming too easy. ” At that point, Texas had gained 158 yards on 13 carries — an aver age of more than 12 yards a carry — but moments later Akins went down, and Texas had to rely on its defense to beat the Horned Frogs. One of the defensive stars was fr eshman end Tim Campbell, who ta ckled TCU quarterbacks four times for losses. “He thinks he is a one-man pass rush, and he just about is,” said Ro yal. “He’s about the best pass rusher we’ve had.” ★★★ (AP) — Texas Tech defensive li neman Ray Hennig is a doubtful st arter for the Raiders game Saturday with the Arkansas Razorbacks at Fa yetteville. Coach Steve Sloan watched the Raiders train under 30-degree we ather Wednesday and said the team “looked (AP) — Baylor Coach Grant Teafi said Wednesday defensive tackles Wharton Foster and Les Benson and defensive end Chris Quinn are doubtful starters for Saturday’s game with Southern Methodist. TOMORROW: Texas. i >-■ , ~ je-fi <*>' 1 OU-Nebraska game will not be broadcast Associated Press TULSA — U. S. District Court Judge H. Dale Cook declined Tu esday to issue an order allowing the Oklahoma-Nebraska football game Saturday to be televised. The judge denied a temporary re straining order requested by John Irvan Moritzky, a Sand Springs at torney who had challenged the NCAA ban on televising the So- oners. Judge Cook said there was no ev idence that the damage to anyone if the game wasn’t televised would be irreparable. A trial will be scheduled later to determine if the ban is un constitutional.
