Page 10 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, NOV. 12, 1975 Six starters questionable Bellard worried about injured By DAVID WALKER Battalion Sports Writer It was supposed to be a press con ference, but it sounded more like a medical report. Aggie coach Emory Bellard faced the members of the press yesterday in the Letterman’s Lounge at G. Rollie White and announced the names of six starters that probably will not play this Saturday against Rice. Center Henry Tracy is lost to the Ags for the remainder of the season after a freak incident in practice last Thursday. Tracy was sitting on the curb of Kyle Field when he was hit in the eye with a thrown football. He went through workout Thursday and Fri day but complained of double vision after dinner Friday night. The injury was diagnosed as a de tached retina. Tracy was operated on yesterday in Houston and the operation was termed a success. He will have full and complete vision in the injured eye. Jimmy Dean will also miss his second game with a cut tendon in his hand. He is expected to return for the Texas game. Four starters were injured in the SMU game and were termed “very doubtful” by Bellard for the Rice contest. Quarterback David Shipman and offensive tackle Glen Bujnoch both suffered strained knees and linebackers Garth Ten Napel and Grady Wilkerson broke thumbs in the SMU contest and are also doubt ful for Saturday. Shipman will be backed up by Mike Jay who saw considerable ac tion against SMU. “Right now we are preparing Mike Jay to start for us at quarterback Saturday. Shipman’s knee is responding to treatment, but Jay will probably start,” Bellard said. “Mike played very well last Saturday. I thought he was a little nervous on his first series, but he settled down and played a fine game, Bellard added. Sophomore Mark Dennard started for Tracy Saturday, and Bel lard was also pleased with his per formance. “Mark did an excellent job and he will continue to do the job. I’ve got highest respect for him as a player and as a person,” Bellard said. The Aggie coach also had praise for David Barrington and Steve Spitzenberger who filled in for Dean. “Both fellas did a fine job. They’re solid and dependable players. Bellard also announced tentative replacements for the starters who were hurt against SMU. Either Craig Glendenning or Dennis Smelser will start in Buj- noch’s place against Rice. Robert Jackson will start at middle linebacker if Wilkerson isn’t able to go and either Jessie Hunnicut or Kevin Monk will go at the outside linebacker spot vacated by Ten Napel. It is possible that Ten Napel and Wilkerson will be able to go against Rice. After the injury situation was talked over the subject switched to Rice. “Rice has got a fine football team,” Bellard said. “They have lost five games by four points or less and they have been out of only one game, Texas.” “Their offense is the best a Rice team has had since I ve been at A&M. Ronnie Coleman and Eddie Sykes are fine running backs and Tommy Kramer is an excellent quarterback,” Bellard said. “Kramer has been doing a fine job since he became established as the No. 1 quarterback. He s doing an excellent job both passing and run ning. He s a proven leader, Bellard added. “Defensively they have a very large aggressive crowd. They’ve got one of the finest linebackers you’ll see in Rodney Norton, Bellard said. Bellard also noted the Rice kick- INTRAMURALS Fish: M-Band over B-l; Sq. 2 over W-Band; Sq. 8 over Sq. 15; D-l over Sq. 9; L-l over Sq. 7; Sq. 3 over Sq. 11; Sq. 10 over F-l; M-l over C-l. • Civilian: Moore over Dunn; Walton over Milner; Hotard over Mclnnis; Legett over Utay; Independent: Saints over Forestry; Harry’s over GRAB; DOM over Moore No. 2; El Salvador over Sigma Rho No. 2; Newman I over AMF; Best Yet over Pete I; Sigma Rho I over Parkway; Wild Bunch over VK. Briefs DENVER — The Denver Bron cos announced the signing of run ning back Alfred Haywood from the defunct World Football League Tuesday. Haywood, a5-foot-ll, 215-pound running back who played with the Jacksonville Sharks, will be in un iform for Sunday’s game against the Chargers in San Diego, Broncos spokesman said. Haywood played his college foot ball at Bethune-Cookman. To make room for Haywood on the roster, the Broncos released rookie linebacker Mike Lemon. Lemon, who signed a week ago, played his college football at Kan- FREE ENGRAVING WITH THE PURCHASE OF ANY CROSS PEN Writing Instruments in 14 Karat Gold Filled Pen or Pencil $15.00 Set $30.00 Mechanically guaranteed for a lifetime of writing pleasure. Over 60,000 are expected for the game that is being billed as "The last one before Texas.” Bellard doesn’t see any looking ahead. “I hope we re not going to be flat. I don’t think we ll be looking ahead because we can t afford to look ahead. Rice has a darn fine football team, and we had better be pre pared for an all out effort. Another problem Bellard sees for the Rice trip is deciding on the 48 players that will make the trip. “With our injury situation we ll just have to wait till the last minute to see who goes.” 75 MODELS TO CHOOSE FROM WE GIVE m STORE HOURS Store Hours 8 a.m. to8 p.m. Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Specials Good Nov. 13 thru Nov. 15 ^Ti^SHOP PIGGLY WIGGLY WHERE THE STORE'S AS CLEAN AS YOUR KITCHEN y // YOU AS A CHARMING LADY SHOULD EXPECT THE PIACE YOU SHOP TO BE CLEAN AND ORDERLY, y- // AISLES KEPT FREE OF TRASH AND B0XES....AU0WING YOU TO MOVE YOUR SHOPPING CART *4 1 SHT SV ’ WITH EASE AND COMFORT ......IF IT ISNT AS NICE AS YOU'D LIKE IT.....Y0U'R SHOPPING IN THE WRONG STORE.
