By PAUL McGRATH Monday, the Texas A&M cross country team will compete with eight other teams in what may be the most hotly contested Southwest Conference championship race Political Forum Presents Rep. Bill Sullivant The Role of Texas Lobbyists’ 12:30 p.m. lues. Nov. 11 601 Rudder Tower Six teams, including the Aggies ol Coach Ted Nelson, have a strong chance at coming away with the marbles. “This is probably the best com petitive race ever in the SWC,” said Nelson. “We’ve got to have five men that run well, and our seventh man is going to have to beat some one else’s fifth man.” Nelson will take nine men to Houston’s Glen- brook Golf Course, the site of the four-mile title jaunt. Seven will run with the first five counting for the accumulative team score. “I’m pretty optimistic about our chances. If we run in our capabilities we could finish any where in the top four,” Nelson said. “We’ve got to have good perfor mances out of all of our people. A lot will depend on our fifth runner. Right now I don’t know who that will be,” he said. The A&M squad consists of Bruce Smith, Charles Cottle, Kyle Heff ner, Jacob Yemme, Manfred Kohrs, Lane Mitchell, Walter Jachimowicz and Marvin Moffett. The big gun is Smith, who has been the Aggies' first runner three times this season. The Ags have been on a streak as of late, winning soundly their last two meets with almost perfect exhibitions of team running (run ning as a group or pack). However, they have not run competively in two weeks, which according to Nel son, may be an advantage. “When you race every week you miss some of the training you need. We were able to get in a lot of the training we needed and gave a couple of our runners with nagging injuries a chance to recuperate, said Nelson. The Aggies may well need the rest they received when faced with foes such as Rice, Arkansas, Texas and Houston. Texas Tech, SMU, TCU and Baylor will also be there to stir up the kettle. Arkansas, with Naill O’Shaughnessey, Randy Melancon and Steve Baker, was the league champ last year and has lost no one off that title team. He and John Lodwick form the backbone of the Owl squad. Wells was last year’s top individual finisher and is the odds on favorite to cop that crown again Monday despite a few hampering calf ailments. Texas is led by Reed Fischer and the Craig brothers, Paul and John. “Texas really came on strong last week (they defeated Rice decisively in Austin),” Nelson said. “I’ve known they’ve had the ability all along.” Houston is another prime candi date for the top spot with Brad Rickman, Eric Lothrup and Wayne Brannen forming the top three Cougar runners. The Aggies and Coogs have split in their two meet ings this year. Tech has been somewhat of a mystery team, but the Red Raiders expect to have one of their best groups ever. They are led by Roger Ellis and Mark Freeman. Baylor, TCU and SMU are on the light side, hut could caui-se a lot of trouble by displacing runners from the favored schools. Hence Nelson’s concern about the performance of his fifth man. Nelson plans for his squad to start out fast on the four-mile course, running the first mile in 4:40 or less. From there, “they’ll have to play it by ear, depending on how the lead ers start out. Nelson hopes to have his squad run basically as a team, staying as close together as possible. He says Rice, Texas and Arkansas are good at this tactic. This meet will be followed by the District six-miler held in Austin on Nov. 17. The district meet will qual- |ify those for NCAA competition. . . .. The Keepsake guarantee assures you of a beautiful, perfect diamond forever. 1 There is no finer diamond ring.
