Box 3667 Bryan, Texas 77801 By PAUL McGRATH Battalion Sports Editor Thanks to the Golden Bears of California, Coach Emory Bellard’s crew has climbed once again to the number four spot in the national polls. California knocked off the unsuspecting USC Trojans to the tune of 28-14, a score that certainly was music to the ears of the other top ten teams. If you remember back to last year’s rebirth of A&M football, you will see that the fourth position is not a strange berth for the Aggies to rest in. The squad was also number four prior to the Kansas and SMU games. They didn’t stay there long afterwards. Now the magic numeral has arisen again, and as fate would have it, the Mustangs from Dallas town will again be in a position to cause some subtraction. A&M is definitely off to its best season in 20 years. The 7-0 record is a stern testimonial to the ability and heart of the coaches and players. However, one small item must be pointed out. The Maroon maul ers are yet to play and defeat a winning team. Let’s look at the Aggie foes and see how they have fared: Ole Miss, although 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference is 4-5 for the year. LSU, in the same league, is 3-5. Illinois is the only team with any resemblance of a winning record, now posting a 4-4 mark. When the Ags went up against Kansas State both teams were undefeated. Now only Bellard’s boys can make that boast and K-State now rests at the bottom of the Big Eight with 0-4 and 3-5 records. Like the Mini, Texas Tech is also 4-4 but has had to win two in a row to even its mark. The hapless TCU Horned Frogs are 0-4 and 0-8 respectively. The Aggies’other SWC opponent, Baylor, is now 2-3-2. Overall, the combined record of all A&M foes is 20-33-3. Not really impressive, is it. Still, the Aggies have the nation’s most formidable defense, a statistic that is no fluke. And it appears they are going to need every bit of it this Saturday. The high-powered offense of the Mustangs motored for 408 yards against the Texas Longhorns. The Ponies averaged five per play on 79 snaps, causing some UT players to compare, perhaps a bit extravagantly, the Mustangs to Oklahoma. There is no doubt the Ponies have a top-notch offense, but it is debatable as to whether they have a defense to match. On many occasions the Mustang front wall has entered a contest disguised as a sieve. Furthermore, there appears to be a molehill of dissension amongst the SMU squad. According to the Dallas Morning News, of 51 SMU players polled under assurance of anonymity, only 23 said they believe Head Coach Dave Smith should return next season. Eight said they didn’t care. Although SMU Athletic Director Dick Davis denies it, rumors are flurrying that Smith will be out of a job by the end of this year. As are all of the other Aggie opponents this year, SMU is some distance away from a winning season. But the score 18-14 should cause some nervousness in the hearts of the Aggie faithful. Had the Aggies won on that dreary Cotton Bowl day, A&M would have been conference champs and the Turkey Day game would have been of no consequence. Palmer wins Cy Young NEW YORK (AP) — Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles, who twice overcame arm problems that threatened his career, was named winner of the Cy Young Award Tuesday as the top pitcher in the American League. It was the second Cy Young trophy for Palmer, who outdis tanced Catfish Hunter of the New York Yankees in voting by a special 24-man panel of the Baseball Writ ers Association of America. At a news conference in Balti more, Palmer (23-11) was asked if he thought he was the best pitcher in the American League. “I think I’m one of the best, he said. “The statistics show I had a better year than him Hunter, but I don’t think I’m any better than him. About the award, the 32-year-old Palmer said: “I felt I was going to win it all the time. Of course, when you’re against an athlete from New York, you never know what will happen. The way I felt this year I felt I could win 30 games if the club had hit behind me. But when you win 23 games, you ought to be satis fied. Palmer finished with a total of 98 points including 15 first-place votes. He was the only pitcher named on all 24 ballots. Hunter, who won the Cy Young award with Oakland last year, finished with 75 points includ ing seven first-place votes.
