Ags sink Navy

The Texas A&M Rugby team
made the long trip to Corpus Christi
this past weekend and just like the
previous week the White squad was
victorious.
This time the Navy fifteen were
the victims of a shutout, 16-0.
Though outmanned at every posi
tion, Navy (used to being tough)
fought hard in the set scrums and
indeed pushed the full-strength Ag
gies around. Only two beautifully
taken drop-goals by English captain
John Rayton gave the Aggies a pre
carious 6-0 halftime lead, according
to John Lipscomb.
A lot of time has been spent with
kickers, though Rayton needed no
help. The drop-goal is back and
Robert Moorman promises to get us
one next time. Wayne Womac too is
very anxious to "get the hang of it.
It is a vital weapon, as no injury is
risked and one can bide his time and
distance. Rayton s kicks were from
40 and 25 yards out. Alan Jeffrey,
who had another fine game at stan
doff— a position quite familiar to
him — said in practice that he can t
see how Rayton got off one of the
kicks (straight between two oppo
nents and in a (fash). Last week it
was Jeffrey who got the game ball.
This time Rayton and Phil Cook
shared it. Pecuniary worries and an
order from club president Billy
Goodrich precludes the ever-
improving Aggies from distributing
game balls to the MVP.
After a pep-talk at the half, the
man who works so hard at his game
was rewarded. Cook, the big cent
er, wasted no time at all when,
twice, at the precisely correct mo
ment he broke straight through on
two Bubba Bean-like runs for tries
of 50 and 70 yards. Tim Field threw
over one two-point conversion but
was off on the other giving the Ag
gies a 16-0 lead. The game ended on
that note but Navy made it a dour
struggle despite their being outclas
sed.
Excellent play by Hilliard (Cur
ley) Simmons, Rick Reno and the
British Lions pair, Rayton and Jef-
fre\ helped the A&M cause. The
protection giv en Simmons at scrum
half, by Moorman, really made
things click. Field let a few high
ones bounce precipitously that he
should have caught but is learning
fast and both Rayton and Jeffrey are
helping him develop "position at
fullback.
His punting was superb. John
Patrick in the lineouts and the en
tire front row did well and if they
could master the loose rucks and
mauls with any consistency they
could be on their way.
Meanwhile, a ferocious Corpus
Christi squad downed the Maroons
by the score of 6-4. Tom Cervenka
galloped 30 yards for the only Aggie
try, with the conversion failing. In
this game little protection was given
to scrum-half Butch Lewis, giving
him no time to set the backline mov
ing. As usual, Mike Trahan and
Lewis played solidly and the man
who scored last weeks try, Dick
Schntt, again served notice that he
is ready to move up. He spent some
time in Australia and is a fine stu
dent of the game.
Billy Tigner and Womac will have
a chance to let their injuries heal as
there is no game this weekend.
The varsity have now won three
in a row. All comers are welcome to
the Drill Field Monday through
Thursday at 5 p.m.
