However, as anyone who was present can attest, there was very definitely an actor in last night s production of Oedipus the King. This actor was Dr. Peter Arnott, who IS the Arnott Marionette Thea ter. Dr. Arnott manipulates the fi gures, controls the lighting, and speaks all the parts. And does all with such consummate skill that the absence of other actors is only rarely noticed. Dr. Arnott has used the absence of the distractions of visible actors to insure that Sophocles’ lines, which Arnott translated himself, retain BATTALION CLASSIFIED e day WANT AD RATES 10c per word Minimum charge—$1.00 Classified Display $1.50 per column inch each insertion ALL classified ads must be pre-paid. His manipulation of the figures, up to seven at once, on the simple stage adds the necessary emphasis to his lines without engrossing the attention in an excess of activity. Very occasionally he is unable to make immediately clear who is speaking. Only once is the action of the fi gures obviously, distractingly inap propriate. When Oedipus leaves the stage after learning his true rela tionship to Laius and Jocasta, the Chorus has a speech before the entry of a messenger to relate the death of Jocasta. During this speech, two figures turn back and forth, gesticulating with arms and staff. The action is unnatural and jarringly breaks the trance-like ab sorption of the spectator which has been previously established. In addition to controlling the fi gures and speaking the lines. Dr. Arnott controls the lighting — and there are many lighting changes. 'JupTnamba VD cases reported Eddie Dominguez ’66 Joe Arciniega ’74 Greg Price ^ Hiliq flRTiEfilil Dr. Raymond F. Buck, acting county health director, said Tues day that 52 cases of strep throat were also reported in the county last month. Particularly striking is the white spot from the bottom of the stage as Oedipus proclaims his curse upon the murderer of Laius. The curse which he sets upon himself. That one man can simultaneously perform every aspect of a theatrical production, and do so almost flaw lessly, is a testament to that man. Dr. Arnott deserves high praise for his fine achievement. The pathetically tiny audience participated in a rare experience. Those without the foresight to at tend are to be pitied. General Telephone Co. of the Southwest and the cities of Bryan and College Station are anxiously awaiting their day in court. A hearing concerning the is suance of a permanent injunc tion against General Telephone is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday before 85th Dist. Court Judge W. C. Davis in Bryan. The Bryan Council voted this morning to establish new tele phone rates in that city. The $219,(XX) increase is identical to the increase approved last Thursday by the College Station City Council. If the permanent injunction is granted. Genera! Telephone would be forced to accept the reduced rates offered by the two city councils. But the phone company could then file suit in an attempt to get the $1.07 mill ion increase they originally re quested in April by proving the increase would insure a fair rate of return on invested capital. If the permanent injunction is not granted, Bryan and College Station could then file suit in district court to prove that Gen eral Telephone is not entitled to the requested revenue. /I l The Brazos County Health De partment reports that 76 cases of gonorrhea were confirmed in the county during September. 1*1 AM' I S SORfW, D06...WE CANT 6IVE m A KIP6...MV PAP SAYS YOU PROBABLY HAVE FLEAS/ MAH' TOUR SM06 CONTROL DEVICE REPUCE YOUR 6AS Ml LEASE/ ' eg— -3. \ exp at £ ing the leir We I tor Dn wa; gro yot I inc mo be< phi noi exa ne ior 17 tw AGGIE CINEMA Popular Film Series presents _ RICHARD Burton and —ELIZABETH Taylor TAMING OF THE SHREW and WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF Fri. & Sat.
