ige 2 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1975 Scientific papers The lighter side of editorial living .. Among the more interesting 3ces of mail that cross my desk ery day are the scientific and pro- ;sional papers. Take today’s batch for instance, ithout one word of warning or ver letter of explanation I re ived papers with the following ti- ;s: Irrecoverable Three- mensional Stress Strain Relation- ips for Christie’s Sand; The De- rmination of Experimentally sed Load-Deformation Proper- s of a Mine Fill, and finally, Con- illing Cockroaches Without nthetic Organic Insecticides. Looking over this all-star lineup I cided to check into this business out the cockroaches. After all, I d believed for years that synthetic ;ecticides and organic insecticides re two separate things. I had to d the truth so I read on. Here are some of the startling ts. Comments in parenthesis are ' own and can be construed in any y you like. The article began kind of slowly saying that cockroaches were ;h on the homeowners list of sts. It further explained that iches contaminate food with :rement (whose excrement we iy never know) and that they ve an unpleasant odor (you would too if you spread excrement on food ... or anywhere else for that mat ter). In the second part, entitled ‘Coc kroach Description and Biology’, I learned that cockroaches are in gen eral (or for the most part) flattened insects with oval shaped bodies, spiny legs and long filamentous an tennae (Now we’re getting to the heart of the matter). The article further stated that young cockroaches resemble the adults but are smaller and have shorter wings (I suppose you can check this out for yourself). It also states that young roaches can be found in the same places as the big ones (probably where they learn their nasty habits). And did you realize that the female roach drops or glues the eggs in out-of-the-way places? (If you were as well loved as a roach you’d hide your eggs too.) However, egg hiding cannot be generalized to all roaches. The German roach carries the egg case with her until the eggs are ready to hatch (just goes to show you can’t trust a German roach). In part three, I learned that I should identify which roach species are present before I try to control them. (This raised a question in my mind as it shoidd in yours. I had always believed that what was deadly to one roach was deadly to another. In deference to me how ever this question was never answered.) What the authors did at this point however was to launch into a lengthy discussion of the different types of cockroaches. Their names read like an ancient Latin rogue’s gallery. Periplaneta americana, Periplaneta fuliginosa, Blattella germanica, Supella longipalpa, Blatta orientalis and Periplaneta bunnea. And without further fan fare this was the end of part three. Under the heading ‘Cockroach Control Measures’ the authors fi nally got down to discussing what they meant to discuss in the first place (roach control). The part about controlling roaches through sanita tion is ridiculous (everyone knows or should know that you can’t sanitize a cockroach. It’s just impos sible. Roaches move so fast that it’s hard enough just to try and step on them, much less sanitize them). Of course the next section, labeled trapping,’ might provide an answer PEANUTS \n instant replay >f away games? HEY, MA/ ^ STOP THE CAR' THERE'S A 006 LOOKING FOR A RIPE'.'v liter: To my surprise, I discovered that i A&M Athletic Department does t supply a film of away games to be jwn to those unable to attend. After listening to the great win sr LSU, I was very anxious to see ; Aggie football team in action. I led the athletic office to find out tat time the showing would be. I s disappointed, to say the least, it no film would be shown. I know that the Emory Bellard ow is televised the day after the ne and features highlights of the ne. But there is no way that a frill ne of highlights such as the LSU ne can be condensed into a 30- nute program and satisfy the urge Aggie fans to see “their” team so 11. This is a relatively small thing to : of the Athletic Department after listributed only 24.8 per cent of ; acquired tickets for the Tiger ne to the students. It would not be ficult to supply a duplicate of the ne film to KAMU TV for showing i later date or presenting the film the Rudder Theater. They could 3n charge a small fee, if they ;hed, to help deter the cost or pos- ly even make a profit, for I am e that there are many Aggies that uld pay 25 cents to 50 cents to see :h a display of talent. How about it Athletic Depart- nt? Give us a chance to see our m. Support the 12th man. ' Kevin Venner Bus stop gripe Editor: The shuttlebus is transportation that many students use to get to and from campus. I’m sure it’s difficult to work out routes to please everyone, but complaints from students living in Scandia II Apts, need to be consi dered. When the route sheets were given out, they showed the buses stopping near Scandia II’s office, not requiring students to walk a great distance. The route has been changed to split the load between two buses. The bus now stops a block down. Students have to walk to the stop. The walk is not bad when the sun is out, but weather is changing. Compare the time it takes to drive down a block so that students wouldn’t have to walk in the rain, with muddy shoes and bad colds. I find the comparison slanted to the students side. Please try to think of some way to remedy this situation. Perhaps coming down a block to pick students up is just the remedy. (Further inspec tion revealed it did not.) What it did say, however, was that you could build an effective roach trap from materials readily available around the home (that is if you have pint jars and vaseline handy). Apparently the roaches enter the trap, are unable to exit and are thereby effectively held until you can kill them, as the brochure suggests, by dropping them in a pail of hot soapy water (I guess is one way of sanitizing a roach). Boric acid, it seems, is also an effective method of controlling roaches. The authors believe that the roaches don’t recognize the acid as a poison and therefore don’t avoid it (handy for the poisoner, unhandy for the poisonee). Aggietoons After all this however, the au thors come right out and tell us that roach control is not the same thing as eradication. It seems that we are to be expected merely to reduce the roach population to an unobjection able number (the scientific mind amazes me). •Brad Foster ef\RL\ THIS PlawT is Auvei or couRsev IT \s!
