On the 1975 rosters, you’ll find a Bull (Arkansas), a Parrott (Baylor), a Peacock (Hous ton), a Bass (TCU), a Drake (Hous ton), a Trout (Rice), Beavers (SMU) and Roaches (A&M). Nor is race, creed or color excluded. Baylor’s Black is white, there are Whites at A&M and Ar kansas, Houston’s Redd is black and there are Greens, Browns and Grays. Baylor’s Grayless, of course, can’t be categorized. There’s a Rose (Rice), a Bean (A&M), Lemons (A&M) and a Burger (A&M). For dessert, how about Cherry (Houston) Maltz (A&M)? There are Cousins (Arkansas) and Brothers (Baylor). No sisters, but there are a Bishop (TCU), a Monk (A&M), a Pope (Tech) and Parsons (at SMU, where else?) playing or coaching in the SWC in 75. While some French (Houston) and English (Houston) Jette (Texas) setters prefer Monaco (Tech) to the SWC, Boston (Rice) headed West (A&M) without benefit of a New (A&M) Ford (Texas) Carr (A&M) as his Price (Houston) for signing the Register (A&M). Not even a Minor (Texas) infraction there. Despite Fears (Baylor) expressed in some Fields (A&M) that football is over-emphasized, SWC grid ros ters include a Ball (Rice) and Batts (Texas). Unfortunately, Glover signed to play outside the SWC. However, the SWC has welcomed Ropers (Arkansas), Lopers (Rice), Skinners (Arkansas), Jumpers (Baylor), Riders (Texas) and Rollers (Texas). There’s a Wood (TCU), and Irons (Tech) and a Hooker (TCU). Milestones should fall like hailstones this autumn. Texas A&M needs five wins to register its 400th varsity football victory, while SMU has won 299 games and Rice 298. Texas’ Darrell Royal, already holder of the most SWC victories, will claim his 100th SWC decision with the Longhorns’ first conference triumph this fall. Going to the extremes, Joe Bob Bizzell of Texas is the SWC s smal lest footballer in 1975 at 5-7 and 142 pounds. A&M’s Billy Lemons, 131 pounds heavier than Bizzell at 273, is the heaviest. Tallest, one foot and one inch over Bizzell s head, is SMU’s Steve Brown at 6-8. But look out for the Cougars next year — Houston junior tackle David Brooks is 280. 7972 Indy 500 winner dies after brain surgery GRAZ, Austria —— Race driver Mark Donohue, in a coma since suf fering brain injuries Sunday in a crash during practice for the Aust rian Grand Prix, died late Tuesday of complications after surgery, The Associated Press learned. Donohue, 38, the 1972 In dianapolis 500 winner, died at ap proximately midnight local time, 7 p.m. EDT, of complications that arose from the three-hour operation to remove a blood clot from his brain. Donohue was hit on the side of his helmet with debris as his car crashed through four rows of catch fences and some billboards along the racecourse. At first it was thought he had suf fered no other injuries than a mild concussion in the crash. After being checked over at the track hospital, he complained of a worsening headache. He was rushed to Landes Kran- kenhaus hospital in Graz after he went into mild convulsions. Donohue’s death was announced by a spokesman for his car owner, Roger Penske, a close personal friend and a long-time associate. Penske, along with Donohue’s wife Eden and father Mark Sr., were at Donohue’s bedside here. Donohue, who had driven exclu sively for Penske since 1966, was one of the sport’s most versatile and successful performers. He had won 57 major professional races, including NAS CAR Grand National events. Sports Car Club of America races and three U.S. Auto Club events. One of the sport’s $1 million career winners, Donohue retired Feb. 15, 1974 after winning the In ternational Race of Champions at Daytona. However, he agreed to drive Penske s new Formula I entry in 1975 and 1976. Penske had origi nally contracted the late Peter Re- vson to drive the car. Donohue, a Brown University engineering graduate, won the Trans-Am and Can-Am series championships, the 24 Hours of Daytona, the U.S. Road Racing Championship and was SCCA Driver of the Year in 1965. Just two weeks ago Donohue had set the world’s closed-course speed record of 221.160 miles an hour in his old Can Am car. U.S. grounds fighter bombers WASHINGTON — The Air Force has grounded 240 Fill fighter bombers to inspect them for possible engine defects. The grounding was ordered alter fire broke out in an Fill as it was pre paring to take off at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. No one was hurt in the incident. A check of the Nellis Fill turned up cracks in turbine blades. Although the SWC set total at tendance and per-game average at tendance all-time records in 1974, only two stadium records fell — the 50,200 who saw Texas A&M at Baylor and the 54,622 delighted Razorback fans who sat in on the Little Rock massacre of Southern Cal. A quartet of SWC schools will be seeking to improve upon national marks established over the past five seasons. During that time, Tech has had the nation’s third best pass de fense (99.0) while A&M has been eighth best (108.5) Houston has managed the seventh best defense against the run per game (130.6). Offensively, Texas is sixth in scoring offense, second in rushing offense and ninth in total offense. Houston is sixth in rushing and fourth in total offense. Freshman soccer style kicker Al varo Arenas, a native of Colombia, impressed Rice football coach Al Conover Tuesday as the Owls con tinued their fall drills in shorts prior to putting on pads Thursday. Arenas, a slim 5-7 148-pounder being groomed to replace Alan Pringle, booted several kicks bet ween the uprights from 55 yards out and also was consistent at closer ranges. Jim Kelley, a letterman linebacker from Smyer, also par ticipated in the workout and officials said he appeared recovered from a knee injury that forced him to miss spring training. The Owls will begin two-a-day workouts Thursday and Conover has slated the first full scrimmage for Saturday night. SI michad# Prei'SeKooi 2505 S.
