A fine recruiting year too
Aggie baseballers shine in summer leagues
By DAVID WALKER
Staff Sports Writer
While football has been owning
the sports pages for the past couple
of weeks there is another sport on
campus that is gearing up already
for what plans on being another
super season.
Just off their best season ever,
some of Coach Tom Chandler’s
Texas Aggie baseballers are making
fine showings in summer baseball.
Fine enough to have the coach ex
cited about next season.
“We had a good recruiting year
and I’m pretty excited,” Chandler
said. “We lack the big strong home
run threat that we had with Jim
Bratsen so it looks like we’ll have to
go back to the singles, hit and run
and more base running type of
game.”
Chandler cited some of next sea
son’s returnees for having an “excel
lent” season this year in summer
ball.
Pitchers David Lockett and
James “Hoot” Gibson are pitching
for the Liberal Kansas Bee Jays. The
Bee Jays are a strong team that have
advanced to the Kansas regional
tournament. Gibson has a 6-3 re
cord while Lockett has a 9-2 record
and a 1.86 Earned Run Average.
More good news for next year’s
pitching staff comes from Wichita
Falls where Clint Thomas is pitch
ing for the Wichita Coors Brewers.
Thomas has a 10-1 record and has
pitched a no-hitter. All-SWC out
fielder Bill Raymer is playing in the
outfield for the Brewers who are
managed by former Giant outfielder
Darrell Spencer.
“Kirk Campbell has had an out
standing season with the Karl Young
All-Stars out of Houston, ” Chandler
said.
Campbell has been drafted by a
Corpus Christi team to play in the
regional tournament in Pueblo,
Colorado.
Three Aggies-to-be are also hav
ing fine summers. Second baseman
Buddy Grobe is having a fine season
with the Hallstead Kansas Cowboys
and catcher Buster Turner is also
having a fine summer with the
Texarkana Truckers.

Aggie club
gives money
to athletics
The athletic scholarship program
at Texas A&M is $200,000 richer
these days.
The Aggie Club presented the
check to Athletic Director and Head
Football Coach Emory Bellard at
the Houston A&M Club s annual
Kick-Off dinner at the Marriott
Motor Hotel Monday night.
Cyrus Johnston, Aggie Club Pres
ident, made the presentation of the
check before more than 900 Aggie
football fans.
The check was the final payment
of $260,500 the club has given to the
athletic department this year.
The Aggie Club is a non-profit,
tax-exempt organization that raises
funds to finance athletic scholar
ships for Texas A&M athletes. The
athletic department must operate
only on funds from gate receipts,
television and bowl receipts and
from donations such as those pro
vided by the Aggie Club.
Johnston noted that many of the
crowd present were members of the
club and had made the large check
possible through their generous
gifts.
“Houston gave us the greatest
amount of financial support this
year, said Johnston. “We have had
a record year in fund-raising
through the Aggie Club and want to
thank you for it, and to remind you
to renew your gifts next year as
well.”
Bellard thanked Johnston and the
club for their support. “It’s always
great to receive the fine backing ol
so many people,” Bellard said. “Ag
gies have always been great suppor
ters of their school and their foot
ball, and this check proves it.
