THE BATTALION Page 9 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1975 A fine recruiting year too Aggie baseballers shine in summer leagues By DAVID WALKER Staff Sports Writer While football has been owning the sports pages for the past couple of weeks there is another sport on campus that is gearing up already for what plans on being another super season. Just off their best season ever, some of Coach Tom Chandler’s Texas Aggie baseballers are making fine showings in summer baseball. Fine enough to have the coach ex cited about next season. “We had a good recruiting year and I’m pretty excited,” Chandler said. “We lack the big strong home run threat that we had with Jim Bratsen so it looks like we’ll have to go back to the singles, hit and run and more base running type of game.” Chandler cited some of next sea son’s returnees for having an “excel lent” season this year in summer ball. Pitchers David Lockett and James “Hoot” Gibson are pitching for the Liberal Kansas Bee Jays. The Bee Jays are a strong team that have advanced to the Kansas regional tournament. Gibson has a 6-3 re cord while Lockett has a 9-2 record and a 1.86 Earned Run Average. More good news for next year’s pitching staff comes from Wichita Falls where Clint Thomas is pitch ing for the Wichita Coors Brewers. Thomas has a 10-1 record and has pitched a no-hitter. All-SWC out fielder Bill Raymer is playing in the outfield for the Brewers who are managed by former Giant outfielder Darrell Spencer. “Kirk Campbell has had an out standing season with the Karl Young All-Stars out of Houston, ” Chandler said. Campbell has been drafted by a Corpus Christi team to play in the regional tournament in Pueblo, Colorado. Three Aggies-to-be are also hav ing fine summers. Second baseman Buddy Grobe is having a fine season with the Hallstead Kansas Cowboys and catcher Buster Turner is also having a fine summer with the Texarkana Truckers.
