V Page 14 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 1975 Caution: sports can be habit forming By DAVID WALKER One of the hardest things for a person to admit to himself is that he is addicted to something. I had to face that terrible predica ment last week. I was sitting in a local theater watching “The Longest Yard.” The football part of the movie was exciting (not J: as exciting as,' the girl that was t with me, but ex citing) but it got me to thinking about next year’s Aggie football team and it hit - . me, I finally realized that I’m sports. ing streak in the history of the state and the Ags and the Oilers ~ were putting some 2-9’s, 3-8’s and 1-13’s together. Even that wasn’t enough to scare me away. When I came to A&M it went from bad to worse. I never missed anything. (Take a look at my grades and you’ll see that I’ve been doing something besides studying.) But I guess I just noticed it last weekend for the first time. When we left the movie as soon~ as I got in my car I turned on the radio to see how the Astros were doing. They were winning and the shock was enough to carry me for a while. Then came Saturday and base ball in the afternoon and baseball at night. The toughest decision I had to make was whether to watch all of the Astros game or turn to Houston Wrestling. (Some people think Houston Wrestling is My life is like Wide World of Sports. It started innocently enough when I was a baby. My father bought me a Texas Long horn t-shirt. That helped me de velop the competitive instinct be cause I had the urge to fight him. Then it gradually got worse. Pee-wee baseball, junior high football then high school baseball. My parents did nothing to help me. On Fridays we would watch my high school, on Saturday I would come see the Aggies and on Sunday my father and I would go see the Houston Oilers. At the time my high school was in the process of having the longest los- Ags sign threesome to golf team TAMU golf coach Bob Ellis has announced the signing of three re cruits to letters-of-intent. Maynard, who was graduated from Brevard Junior College in Cocoa, Fla., won the Junior- Senior Intercollegiate in 1975. He was second in the Indian River Invitational and Valencia Invita tional and qualified for the National Publinx Tournament. Lintz is the Missouri state High school medalist for two years and won the state junior match play tournament for two years. fake and refuse to call it a sport, but when you are addicted you have no choice.) Watching both the Astros and wrestling on the same night was confusing, because they both fall around so much. When that was over I started putting some finishing touches on an article I was doing for the Texas Aggie Magazine about next year’s football team, and I got excited about that all over again. Sunday morning when I got up I went out to get my paper. The first thing I saw in it was a pic ture of Shelby Metcalf with an article about how good the Aggie basketball team is going to be next year. It’s great for an addict to get a fix that early in the morn ing. That carried me most of Sunday although I did watch the Astros again. Monday was rather dull waiting for Monday Night Base ball. Then comes Tuesday and I get my morning paper and I see an article talking about how the Ag gies made a haul of the top pit chers in the Houston area. After watching the Astros for the past couple of days, it was good to get some baseball news. Then after thinking all day Tuesday about how the Aggies were going to win every game they play next year in every sport I had to call Coach Melvin Robert son to talk about football for an- i. son to talk about football for another article. Well, needless to say, 1 got to thinking about the football team again and got all excited again. Here we are with today. I haven’t had anything really excit ing happen as far as sports go but I’m still thinking about next year. Just in case yon didn t know there are 66 days until the first football game.
