News Off®: Suapply Co. 108 College Main — Northgate THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 1975 Intramurals suffe participation lag By DEBORAH LACY Staff Sports Writer Did everybody know there was still an intramural program going on during the summer? Apparently not, because out of approximately 8,000 students enrolled for the first summer session, only about 576 people are participating in in tramural sports, according to Susan Schleider, assistant director for the intramural program, and included in the 576 participants are faculty and staff members. Both summer sessions include slow-pitch softball, three-man vol leyball, three-man basketball, and racketball, tennis, and handball singles and doubles. Of all the sports offered this summer, so far softball has been the leading game — drawing in 312 par ticipants in the first summer ses sion. Three-man basketball has 65 participants and 130 participations for this session. PHISDDER1 SKIN CLEANSER SUDSING HYPOALLERGENIC 5 0Z. ADJUSTABLE PKG OF 4 It’s too late to sign up for the first summer session, but there’s only 111 more days anyway so if any of these sports interest you, the intramural office will begin taking entries the second session July 9-14. Off-campus students, on-camp® students, women, men, facultyani staff can sign up for as many .sports* they want to play. The only proble® with signing up for more than one sport is the schedule clash. Last year the intramural progran grew to an all time high in particip* tion. The 45 to 50 per cent increase caused problems in the program, For one thing, fast year s budget wits $70, (KM) per year. That was sup posed to take care of all the pro gram’s expenses (facility up-keep, salaries, equipment, officials)- and left $3.33 per person enrolled which isn’t enough to makethepro- gram work to its fullest potential). The budget request for the 75-15 year was $170,000. This raise would i increase the expenditure from $3.11 per person to $7.73 per person, The new budget for the fall uil make able some things that (he program has done without in tie past years. With the budget in crease and the expected participa tion next year, new things will be added to the intramural program, First of all, I was told that basi cally the majority of the budget bad been sjjent by May. The summer program will cause a dip into n«t year’s budget, because there is not much money left in the budget from last year. So it seems that in the failoneof the first things the new budget will he spent on will he paying for (be summer sessions. Some of the new additions to the program will be a new assistant director who will be directly involved with the sports, a new softball field across the railroad tracks, more officials who are qual ified to referee the games so that more games can he played, new equipment, an increase of the staff, a co-recreational program, and more supervision in the areas of campus facilities so they don’t have to close at 5.00 anymore. AM says he’ll quit after bout At a news conference Monday Muhammad Ali said, T’m 99 per cent sure 1 11 retire. And at a news conference Tuesday he said that be intended to make his July 1 title defense against Joe Bugner his last fight. But he also added thatthereis some pressure on him to fight Joe Frazier once more. “That’s the only thing that’s giv ing me any trouble, Ali said.' be already gotten telegrams from peo ple saying I have to fight Joe Frazier again (each man has won onefigb' against the other). If Ali changes his mind about quitting and meets Frazier, it prob ably won’t be in October as plan ned. He said he would begin filming a story about his life Oct. 10 entitled “The Greatest. Ali said he wanted to spend more time with his wife, children, make movies, lecture and become more involved in the Nation of Islam, also known as the Black Muslims. Also, he said he would like to quit when he’s on top as did such ath letes as the late Rocky Marciano, the undefeated heavyweight champion, and football star Jim Brown. “Too many fighters have quit beaten I’m starting to get hurt more and I’m gonna have to fall soon, said t he 33-year-old Ali who has lost twice against 47 victories as a pro All’s announcement can decrease or increase the pressure on him, just as other aspects like humidity, heat, and age will bring the press ure in. The age of Bugner is one of those interesting aspects about youth vs- age. Bugner is 25. In what will be his 50th pro fight, Ali is favored 5-2.
