Rice inks state s star prep pitcher Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 1975 BATTALION CLASSIFIED If a coach signs one of his best- ever pitching prospects, you would assume he would watch the youngs ter pitch in a big All-Star game, right? Especially, if the coach at game time was on his university campus just a few minutes from the game site. Well, Doug Osburn of Rice is ex cited and joyful he has steller Allen Ramirez of Victoria inked to an Owl baseball scholarship. He is proud Ramirez is the probable starter for the South in the Texas High School baseball All-Star game due Satur day, June 21, at 4 p.m. at the As trodome. And Coach Osburn will be on the Rice campus, just a couple minute drive from the Dome, when that game begins, but he will NOT be at the contest. Why? He has a previ ous engagement conflict even young Ramirez and parents Mr. & Mrs. Ray Ramirez happily accept as an “excused absence” — At ex actly game time, 4 p.m., Coach Os burn is to be married in the Rice Chapel to Miss Nancy Hines! Ramirez, who aspires to a career as a dentist after his baseball days are over, likely would have gone pretty high in the recent pro baseball draft. But he emphasized to all scouts he was first going to college before pro ball, and was av idly sought by Texas, UH, and A&M. The 180, 5-11 strong arm right hander was a starter for four seasons for the Victoria Stingarees, with a 37-15 career mark and a string of school records. He has superior vel ocity which built an imposing career strikeout total of 529, with a season high of 175, and a game high of 18. His career ERA was under one run per game. He won 11 games this past season while pacing Coach Robert Tripson’s Stingarees to their first District 25-AAAA title. Nor did his teammates, who put together three impressive victories after Wortham lost a 5-2 decision to Arizona State in the second round of the 8-team tournament. I have to be especially thrilled for Richard Wortham,” said Texas Coach Cliff Gustafson. If anybody deserved that kind of performance, TCU signs star Juco basketballer FORT WORTH—Texas Christ ian University head basketball coach Johnny Swaim has announced the signing of 6-8 postman Gary Randle, a junior transfer. Randle averaged 15.8 points and nine rebounds per game last season for Riverside City College in River side, California. He shot58 percent from the floor and 76 per cent from the free throw line in the team’s 33 games. He was all-league and all-country at Riverside North High School and was then named co-Most Valuable Player of the University of Califor nia at Riverside freshman team. After that, Wortham seemed to sense victory. A bases-Ioaded walk forced in the first Longhorn run in the second in ning after an error kept the inning alive, Mickey Reichenback contri buted a 2-mn home run in the third, Keith Moreland doubled home another run in the fourth and the final Texas marker came on Garry Pyka’s squeeze bunt in the eighth. He allowed only two singles and a walk and was aided by a couple of fine defensive plays. He finished the season 15-1. “The defense didn’t let down in any area, and that was a big factor, ” said Gustafson of his second-rated team that finished 56-5.
