Page 16 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1975 Astros under new management? By DAVID WALKER It’s that time of year for sports writers to write a column on what’s the matter with the Astros, so here is mine: Everything. They are having trouble hitting the ball and they are also having trouble catching it. Friends, they’re just having trouble. Just as success breeds success, dis aster breeds disaster and the Astros are breeding more disaster everyday. r My sources close . to the Dome men have informed me that there is a very good chance that the Astros will have a new owner before the week is over. It would be useless to guess what all would happen if and when ownership changed hands but it is the general feeling that there will be an entire house cleaning. This means probably that mana- ager Preston Gomez will be one of the first to go, shortly followed by manager Spec Richardson. This is my thoughts, not my sources. The feeling is mixed in and around the Astrodome as to what will get the ax now anti some say it won’t happen until the end of this season, which for the Astros is a long way away. The Only sure thing is that by the end of the week or early next week Roy Hofeinz, for the first time in over 13 years, will not own a pro baseball team. ★ ★ ★ There is still talk around the As trodome about trading Tommy Helms before the June 15 trading Ferns disagree with NCAA (continued from page 14) of a certain amount, and half of that is required to support the football program and the other half goes to other activities, then you can see that a problem would evolve when someone says you now have to spend an equal amount for women. You could bankrupt the whole athletic program,” Dr. Samson said. "This lias continued to be an active subject. Did the conference have a respon sibility to step in and take the initiative in the area of women’s ath letics? Should we say we’re going to have women’s teams in these eight sports as well as men’s teams? i “It was our recommendation that ’ the conference should endeavor to set up good communications with the women’s organization, to work with them, have joint discussions and see what could be done to benefit both programs,” Dr. Samson said. As far as the HEW guidelines go, Dr. Samson said last summer there was a period' in which conferences cotdd deact to the guidelines and send recommendations to HEW for their consideration in preparing a final draft. “The final draft was presented to I the President two or three months ago and within the past couple of weeks he signed the bill. Our con ference reacted to these guidelines and expressed some concern about some of the points in the proposed guidelines,” Dr. Samson said. “There needs to be a single group, but the women should have an ap propriate voice,” Dr. Samson said. “I believe it’s their concern that if the NCAA simply absorbs their pro gram, they would not have a repre sentative voice.” Dr. Samson explained that the con ference took no action this past time. “Members have not really had a chance to study the NCAA proposal, so no action has been taken beyond that of a year ago.” “As fas as the SWC stands,” he said, “it's been my observation that the conference hasn’t been inclined as a conference to take over women’s athletics. This has been a concern of many women throughout the state.” “We have not taken any strong steps to assume the responsibility of women’s athletics,” Dr. Samson added. “In fact, I think that many if not all of us question if this would be desirable.” HAVE YOU TRIED ONE OF THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE CHICKEN FRIED STEAKS LATELY? deadline. I don’t see them helping themselves any by making this move for one reason, Helms isn’t worth very much anymore. He is having a bad year at the plate and has obviously slowed down quite a bit in the field from last year. Watching him last weekend I could n’t believe that he was the same baseball player that I had seen make so many great plays in the past few years for the Astros. With the luck I’ve had with my predictions this year Tommy probably will be trad ed today and will improve so fast he will be in the starting lineup for the All-Star game. ★ ★ ★ With the football season just around the corner it’s time for us to start getting ready for next year. Sports Editor Mike Bruton and I will be taking an in-depth look at next year’s football team, position by position. Next week we’ll be look ing at the defensive line. Congratulations to Aggie track- ster Doug Brodhead on being named to the 1975 All-American team. Brod head is the first Aggie track All American since 1969. In that year the Ags had four: Curtis Mills, Jack Abbott, Scott Hendricks and Rockie Woods. One final note. In the past week at least five people have walked up to me on campus and said, “Your David-not-the-quarteback, I recog nized you from your picture in the Balt.” It’s great to be known but to look like that picture is something else. That is a terrible picture and the quality of it in the paper is worse than the picture itself. If I thought I really looked like that pic ture I would save my pay checks and get a face lift. o perfecflj PCrnonentioMiofl SPEC/AL ■for Jyrie.
