THE BATTALION Page 13 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1975 A&M tankers get honors Yates, McKinzie make All-American By MIKF BRUTON Sports Editor The Texas A&M aquatic program recorded the fiftli and sixth All- American for the 1974 season when Paul McKinzie and Jim Yates re- | - L_ Jim Yates ready to score NOSCO’ NORTHGATE ALL SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS 20% OFF Come In and Stock Up! McKinzie and Yates joined Bob German and Carol Hemphill on the elite list of the top swimmers in the nation. “They beat out an aw ful lot of good people,” Coach Den nis Fosdick said of Yates’ and Mc- Kinzie's accomplishment. Fosdick al so commented that the A&M water polo team got good exposure by traveling to California to participate in tournaments. Yates, a field man, was the leading scorer for the Aggie tankers last sea son, hitting 39 goals on 60 attempts for a whopping 69 per cent. Not only was he good at scoring goals but he was also responsible for some of the scoring of his teammates, as he had 41 assists. Yates accounted for 80 of the team’s 189 points for the 1974 season either by scoring or aiding scoring. Fosdick said Yate’s scoring prow ess was a result of his enthusias tic mobility in the water. “He’s (Yates) really a hustler,” the A&M i aquatics mentor said. “He doesn’t fool around once ' he gels in the I water.” McKinzie, the premier goalie of the Southwest, blocked all but 37 of the 202 goals attempted against him for an excellent 81.7 per cent. Fos dick said most of the goals scored against McKinzie were in situations where he had to leave the goal un attended and on penalty shots. “He even blocked about eight of twelve penalty shots,” Fosdick commented. The big senior was also selected as the Outstanding Player in the Southwest by the Texas Water Polo Coaches and Officials Association. Fosdick had nothing but praise for McKinzie. “He’s a super, super ath lete; he’ll really be missed,” be said. Yates and Mckinzie were not a two- man team this past season, as A&M had seven men on the first All- Texas Water Polo list, and eight men on the second team. Along with Yates and McKinzie on the first team were: Oran Marksbury, Lee Davis, Steve Moore, Larry Scheckler, and Wade Mattingly. The Aggies held eight of the nine spots on the second team. A&M aquanauts on the second unit were: Don Wederman, Scott Hawkins, Nash Dowdle, Doug Adamson, Mark Vanderhurst, Bob Leland, David Mceh and Grek Meek. The A&M water polo is a per- rcnial power in the southwest and with McKinzie the only swimmer not returning, they should continue their winning ways. Fosdick pointed out that McKinzie’s size and talent would be greatly missed but bis replace ment Steve Engle should do an adequate job. “I really think Steve ((Engle) can do it for us,” he add ed. “We’ll be as strong or better offensively, but maybe, a little weak er at the goal.” Fosdick expressed optimism about the upcoming year in swimming as well as water polo. The A&M wo men’s swim team returns in tact, the men’s swim team returns every one but Schueckler, and with the recent signings of several very tal ented swimmers one could under stand Fosdick’s elation. “We’s had, without a doubt, the best recruiting year since I’ve been here,” he said.
