‘Aggie traditions carry obligations’ Page 4 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1975 WANT AD RATES BATTALION CLASSIFIED One day Dallas banker and businessman James W. Aston told the Saturday contingent of spring graduates that the “Spirit of Aggieland’ will put them in good stead for the inevita ble changes facing them. Aston told the Class of ’75 that Aggie tradition carries with it an ob ligation to return to the people of Texas a dividend of service greater than received. “We live in a world of constant change, and if we are to pass on the future generations a better world, we can never cease our quest for knowledge and our adaptability to change,” he reminded the graduates. TAMU divided its commence ment into dual exercises this year to accommodate the large number of graduates (2074), the first time in its 99-year history the total exceeded 2,000. Nearly 30 percent of the 1,690 recipients of baccalaureate degrees were awarded with “hon ors’ designation, meaning the reci pients achieved grade point ratios of at least 3.25 out of a possible 4.0. Aston assured the graduates they are off to a good start. “You have been privileged to have the opportunity to obtain an education equal to the best in the world,” he said. “May I give you a gentle reminder, however, that the real test will be how well you absorb and assimilate future opportunities and how well you meet the chal lenges of life awaiting you. ” “That which is worthwhile is rarely easy,” he observed. “Life is filled with opportunities; it is also filled with perils along the way. Al ways, in the final analysis, we must ask ourselves the old question: ‘Did you bring in the ship?’. ” Military commissions were awarded to 130 of the graduates, with all four branches of the armed forces gaining new officers, includ ing Collette Boyd of Denison, who entered the Army and was the first woman to pin on gold bars at such ceremonies. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Samuel Jaskilka served as commissioning of ficer as well as being the honored guest at the Corps of Cadets’ Final Review. General Jaskilka, the Marine Corps’ deputy chief of staff for man power, made himself an immediate hit by saying his “estimate of the situation was that TAMU had the best corps of cadets in the world.” “What an advantage it is,” he said, “for a young man entering the service to have the benefit of a back ground from Texas A&M.” He admonished the new officers to get ready to assume tomorrow’s leadership of the armed forces. “I say to be a good leader, you need to do three things,” he em phasized. “You must set a good ex ample. You must know your ‘stuff.’ You must communicate.” “Keep working on those traits,” ’the general added. “You can never take your pack off. ” Minimum charge—$1.00 Classified Display $1.50 per column inch each insertion • DEADLINE 3 p.m. day before publication FOR RENT HELP WANTED (| WORK WANTED • 10c per word BgBSSRSfSBSai^^ ROOMMATE WANTED Service For All Chrysler Corp. The residential drive is complete but the business drive is still in progress. “In these days of inflation and the shrinking dollar, I want to assure everyone that money given to the American Cancer Society is budgeted in such a way that it furthers the cancer fight on many different levels,” Joy Painter, co-chairman for the drive, said. “We are trying to teach people how to recognize cancer warning signals and the importance of early detection and prompt treatment,” she said.
