Today it’s time for the First An nual David Walker Awards. The DWA’s are given to people, places or things that I came across during the past year while on the road following the Texas Aggies. BEST HOTEL: Washington Plaza in Seattle. I liked this place be cause I like a round hotel that has a monorail running by it. BEST FOOD: No doubt, Tupi- namba in Dallas. Take a bow Ed die, Joe and Greg. NICEST PERSON: The lady in Lubbock that went through three bags of trash to find my press pass. FAVORITE GAME: Three way tie. TAMU-LSU in football. TAMU-SMU (2nd game) basket ball, and the third baseball game between A&M and Texas. Aggies SURPRISE OF THE YEAR: Baylor. They sur prised them selves. MOST UNDER RATED: A- nother three way tie. Jerry Honore in football. Jerry had a great season and did the job everytime he was called on, especially in the Arkansas game. Jerry Mercer in basketball. Jerry never got much ink but some insiders feel that he was the main cog in the Aggie championship ex press. Tommy Hawthorne in base ball. Tommy had fewer bases stolen off of him than any other SWC catcher and he also hit that big home run that beat the Horns. SPORTS WRITER OF THE YEAR: Jerry Wizig of the Houston Chronicle. He made all 11 football games and 15 basketball games. That’s a lot of trips from Houston. ★★★ With football just around the Wilt sponsors fem track club LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wilt Chamberlain has tried to meld into the masses as just another citizen, avoiding as much publicity as a 7-foot-l former National Basketball Association star can. But there’s one place he often can be found — at track meets where Wilt’s Wonder Women compete. Although he won’t talk about his days as an NBA star because, ac cording to his attorney, he “ans wered so many dumb questions,” he loves to talk about track and the team he sponsors. “Track has always been my No. 1 sport, but it didn’t take me long to realize I couldn’t make as much money in track as I could in basket- DID YOU KNOW THAT THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE NOW SERVES BAR-B- QUE PLATE. I competed at the Penn Relays one year, and when I got there I realized there were no female events. Well, my sister Bar bara, when we were in high school, was a great athlete. “She was a sprinter and very fast, I think she could have been another Wilma Rudolph, but there was no place for her to compete, so she never developed like she could have. “She might have been as great an athlete as I was. ” Chamberlain then waxed philosophic: “Here in America, there is a lack of equality in race, in sex and in sports, too. I don’t think there’s been enough equality in the area of women’s track especially. corner I have decided to come up with the first official predic tions for next year’s SWC race. 1. Texas A&M 2. Arkansas 3. Texas 4. Texas Tech 5. SMU 6. Baylor (I believe) 7. Rice 8. TCU It could be a tie for first between the Ags and the Razorbacks. The Pigs are going to be tough, especial ly in Arkansas where the Aggies have to play, but it’s hard to go against all of the talent on Coach Emory’s side. I know that everybody will just laugh it off and say it’s home cook ing for the Batt to pick the Aggies but look at the talent, depth and experience. How can you pick any one else? ★★★ The waiting game continues for coach Tom Chandler’s Aggies. Of ficial invites don’t go out until May 12. It’s hard to see the NCAA not giving the Ags a call. There are only nine teams in the USA that have a better record than the Ags and four of them are automatic be cause they are conference winners. Philadelphia trying to get Dick Allen PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies owner Ruly Carpenter said Monday he will con tinue to make every effort possible to get controversial slugger Dick Allen from tbe Atlanta Braves. Carpenter, however, did not hold much hope that the two teams could reach agreement, saying there is about “one chance in 10” Philadel phia will land Allen. And the Pjiillies chief executive discounted the theoiy that Sunday’s trade of Willie Montanez for Garry Maddox of the San Francisco Giants has anything to do with negotiations for Allen. “We made the deal for Maddox on the assumption that we couldn’t make the Allen deal, Carpenter said. “It would have been brilliant planning and a real coup if we could have made both deals at the same time.
