Foolish Pleasure, victor in the Flamingo and Wood Memorial, both $100,000-added events, was made the 9-5 favorite by the Chur chill Downs handicapper after Thursday’s entries. The Darby Dan Farm entry of Prince Thou Art and Sylvan Place, both ahead of Foolish Pleasure in the Florida Derby, was made sec- | ond choice at 7-2. Master Derby, Mrs. Robert Lehmann’s Louisiana Derby king, is 9-2; California Derby hero Diabolo, 8-1; Santa Anita Derby victor Avatar, 10-1; and Arkansas Derby winner Promised City, 20-1. The odds, of course, are only an estimate. The more than 100,000 fans expected to pack Churchill Downs Saturday w ill create the ac tual odds with their betting. If all 15 start in the 5:32 p.m. EDT Derby, it will gross $262,100, with $209,600 to the winner. Sec ond place is worth $30,000, third $15,OCX) and fourth $7,500. The field for the HA-mile Derby also includes Roland Aristone Sr.’s stakes winner Bombay Duck; Honey Mark, winner of last year’s Hyde Park Stakes, and Gatch, who reeled off a string of stakes triumphs last season in Panama. Prince Thou Art and Sylvan Place, with the same ownership, go as a betting entry. Rushing Man, Gatch and Fashion Sale were placed in the mutual field as a single bet ting entry. Although the Churchill Downs track was sloppy Thursday, it al ready was beginning to dry by the time post positions were drawn three hours later. m m € , Smm | 1 I . ’s-vT-' ■ , x t i • «"~y , ... - ... .... % ** * * f- - * T I- - »« ■*.- j ^ n-<4 •?* . * , , f *. f -f A<mm ' * * y A y * *. - '*• * T t *. -•* • •» <*»■>¥■ T' * *' * * r *- j- * \ ^ y > • ■> •A»'~ h f f • 1 * ? * ■ f f .. i <rt. The process of installing the new Astroturf includes pulling up the old rug, scraping off the old padding, and checking the asphalt for neces sary repairs. The new padding is then put in, followed by the install ment of the Astroturf. According to Groff, the surface will be basically the same and have generally the same appearance. “We feel like Monsanto (producers of Astroturf) has developed a better carpet and a little better padding, ” he said. “Hopefully, through new technology, this carpet will last longer.” Most stadiums replace the artificial surface after five years of use, which has been the same for Kyle Field. The old rug is worn quite a bit and will be rolled up and put into stor age, It does have a value, though. Some will be used as indoor carpet, possibly for the golf course club house and the visitors dressing room at the stadium. Who will pay for this renovation? Well, $150,000 will come from pro fits of athletic events (primarily football). The remainder will be borrowed from the University. Groff is hopeful that $80,000 can be set aside each year (if a profit of this is shown) for the placement offuture Kyle Field Astroturf every five years. NY, Hunter overpower Orioles, 5-0 NEW YORK (AP) — Catfish Hunter blanked Baltimore on five hits while Thurman Munson and Ron Blomberg provided the power Thursday night to give the New York Yankees a 5-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
