Page 2 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1975 Fences But why barbed wire? Editor: I fail to see the purpose of putting barbed wire on the fences around the construction sites on campus, namely behind Hart Hall. I realize the fences are for the safety of the students, but is it necessary to use barbed wire? Are students to be kept out like cattle? Will the next step be watchdogs and guards with machine guns? I feel this is more of a hazard to students than the con struction is, especially to students on campus at night. Mark Vance ’78 MSC ‘dandy’ Editor: My wife, Billie and I, attended Parents Day at T.A.M.U. this past Sunday, April 20, and it was really something. We enjoyed every mo ment of tbe day. We visited the M.S.C. and in our opinion, it is a dandy. It is new today and will be new in years to come. During our visit, we heard nothing but praise from parents and visitors. We can honestly say that we heard not one complaint concerning same. You should have seen what we had in ’37. Again we say, “Parents Day” is something. Jack & Billie Ryan ’37 MSC coverage Editor: I take this opportunity to sit down and write to commend the Battalion staff for their excellent coverage of Pahlmann’s reign over the MSC. Your work has been in depth, and is the best piece of journalism I have seen in this community since I came here three years ago. It is obvious that someone has done a great deal of work in order to inform us of what is going on. As a student — who is often considered the low man on the totem pole around here — I ap preciate your efforts in explaining where all the money is going. I also liked the MSC symbol that you have been publishing. I ran into a guy today who had a button with that symbol on it. Are you responsi ble for that too? Right on Battalion! You ve got it together. Richard Lee Davidson (Editor’s note: The Battalion is not responsible for the buttons.) Misconception Editor: I’d like to clear up a misconcep tion that the administration is trying to perpetuate. It is not the concerned students of this campus who have hurt the image of A&M. They are not re sponsible for the MSC whose fur nishings and cost have made A&M a subject of ridicule. I can’t ever re member being asked if I would like to buy the Board of Directors a silver tea set and Tm sure none of my friends can either. This university is founded on the words “stand by the right, even to the sacrifice of life itself. ” If the stu dents feel that an investigation of the Board’s flagrant misuse of their money is right then they ought to continue in their fight to obtain one, no matter what the sacrifice. In the end, if indeed there is a cost to be paid, it will be the result of irres ponsibility by the administration, not students. I hope not all the students back down on this. The administration must know they’ve gone too far this time. They’re putting out the P.R. and have even taken up pressuring our elected student president. The best time to press an issue is when you’re getting pressure from above to stop. Doc Shroff ’75 Batt biased Editor: I must object to your extremely biased front page article on the Equal Rights Amendment in Thursday’s Battalion. Your headline alone is very misleading “Equal rights opponents testify,” — it is true that the opponents did testify but so did the supporters of the E.R.A. The numbers of people for and against who attended were ap proximately equal. The rest of the article was in the same vein as the headline stressing the opposition to the E.R.A. and quoting several of the opponents without once mentioning the advan tages of E.R.A. or quoting its sup porters. I was under the impression that as a newspaper you were supposed to be unbiased on political issues, yet this was the second anti E.R.A. arti cle you have published in just over a week. I therefore assume that within the next few days you will publish at least one pro E.R.A. arti cle stressing the advantages and be nefits of the E.R.A. Or are your own personal prejudices so strong that you cannot produce an unbiased paper, in which case you should res ign. Allan Parker More on muster Editor: We are writing to commend those Aggies who, in their respect and love for their school and its stu dents, attended the Aggie Muster on April 21st. But we were sad dened when we saw how very few Aggies were there. The majority of the Corps of Cadets and some dedi cated civilians were present, but where was the rest of the student body? There were empty spaces every where. They should have had to turn students away because this was OUR Aggie Muster; our most beautiful and lasting tradition. Our point is this, A&M is great because its students, in the past, have worked to make it so. It is up to all of us to keep the traditions of this school alive. If we do, there will always be a group of Aggies some where in the world to honor those Aggies who have passed on. Candace Baumgart ’77, and four others. Batt seeks reporters The Battalion is seeking re porters for now, next fall and the summer. Experience is helpful, but not necessary. Anyone interested should come by Student Publications, room 216 of the Reed McDon ald Services Building. ★★★ Last year 3,100 people stayed at the beach. Permanently. Of course they all drowned. But then, another 55,600 Americans were killed in motor-vehicle accidents. And 17,600 died from falling. Fire claimed another 6,300 lives. The figures go on and on. But maybe you get the point. Don’t let us hear about you by accident.
