Veteran of nine A&M-UT games I! ie t : bat i alion ., Pagc 13 Thurmond ready for UT By DAVID WALKER Staff Baseball Writer A1 Thurmond has been in nine Aggie-Longhorn games, three foot ball and six baseball, since he came to A&M. He’s been on the losing side more than he would like to re member but he’s not planning te- venge for this weekend when ihe two schools get together at Kyle Field. “Sure the series is important but it’s not any more important than any other of the series that we play,’’ Thurmond said. “Each series is im portant and we would like to win all of them, not just Texas.” Thurmond is hitting .410 in South west Conference play only one point behind Mike Frazier for the team lead but is looking for a challenge from the Longhorn pitching staff. “They’ve got a good pitching staff and it’s really going to be a challenge going up against them,” said Thur mond. “We’re looking forward to play ing Texas, I guess you always look forward to playing a real good team because it’s a chance to really hear down and get with it,” said the Spring Branch senior. “Texas has probably the best hit ter in the conference in Keith More land,” Thurmond said. “You hear about Gideon (Texas pitcher Jim) all the time but those other two guys are good pitchers.” Those other pitch ers are Richard Wortham and Martin Flores who have won a total of 11 SWC games without a defeat. “We are out of the race against Texas for the Southwest Conference title but we are very much in the running for a NCAA playoff spot and we’ve got to have a good series against them to get it,” Thurmond said. “We could be undefeated like they are,” said Thurmond. “We haven’t been out of any of our games this season we’ve just had bad breaks, with a couple of breaks here and there we would be in the same place th;U they’re in.” For Battalion Classified Call 845-2226 “The Baylor series really hurt us,” Thurmond said. “We went into that one having played only four games and they had already played 10, we just weren’t ready.” “The Texas Tech loss was a bad one too, we shouldn’t have lost that one but we did.” Thurmond said that there would be no let down against Texas this weekend and that the Aggies would be trying to take the series from the Horns. “We would like to win the series against Texas and just get in to the playoffs, that’s all we’re think ing about now.” INTRODUCTORY OFFER!
