THE PROPOSED 27TH AMENDMENT . . . Section I. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Section II. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provi sions of this article. Section III. This Amendment shall take effect two (2) years after the date of ratification. Constitutional and legal authorities tell us that equalized rights under the law will mean.. . Women will be subject to the draft JUST AS THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN [Selective Draft Law Cases 245 U.S. 360 (1918); Lichter v. U.S., 334 U.S. 742 (1948)]. Combat is not pleasant, FOR WOMEN OR FOR MEN; however, in 1971 during the Vietnam war only one per cent of all males eligible for the draft were assigned to combat units. A proposed codicil to the 27th Amendment spelling out the effect of this amendment on HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGES was defeated by a 73-18 senate majority which felt such clarifica tion was unnecessary and that clearly the ERA DOES NOT LEGALIZE HOMOSEXUAL MAR RIAGES. Included in this majority were Texas Senators John Tower and Lloyd Bentsen. “The transformation of our legal system to one which establishes equal rights for women under the law is long overdue . .. The Equal Rights Amendment will establish complete legal equality without compelling a conformity to any one pattern within private relationships ’’ (Yale Law Journal, April 1971) Brazos County Chapter, National Organization for Women Women’s Awareness Workshop, TAMU Information: Write Box 9903, College Station, Tex. 77840 C01116 [EOkOur For More Shopping Pleasure Bigger Shopping Values ANIMAL WORLD BEALL'S BELL BROTHER'S SHOES BRITT'S CENTURY BOOKSTORE CHRISTY'S HALLMARK COMMERCIAL CREDIT CONE & CANDY COURT'S ECKERD DRUGS EL CHICO THE FAIR CALLENKAMP SHOES CRAVES HARDY CARDENS HOUSE OF JEANS KARMELKORN MARCO'S LA MODE MILADY BEAUTY SHOP MONTGOMERY WARD MUSICLAND PIANO & ORGAN CENTER SINGER SUZY'S TRIPLE THEATRE VILLAGE CASUALS WICKS N STICKS ZALES East Mall Villa Maria at Texas Ave Bryan, Texas
