) THE BATTALION Page 7 FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1975 Home-team advantage proven By MIKE BRUTON Sports Editor There is a term used in the sports world, especially in basketball, called “the home-court advantage.” A home team supposedly receives a spiritual lift from atmosphere pro duced by cheering fans and from the isecurity of knowing that they’re at home or in familiar surroundings. At Aggieland the home-court ad vantage must have double effect as A&M is 33-5 at home in the four ma ns Bor collegiate sports; football, bas- 31 ketball, baseball and track. A&M’s con ference champion basketball team faltered twice in G. Rollie losing to Oral Roberts in overtime and Texas Tech in a game that the Raiders played perfect. The Aggie track- sters dropped two meets here fin ishing second to Rice in a triangular and losing to Baylor by three points in the College Station Relays. Texas Tech put another smudge on A&M’s imm- maculate home record by defeat ing the Aggie baseball team in a recent series. I want to give the credit where it is due — 1 to Aggie fans. There are few, if any, athletes that are dis pleased with the support of A&M partisans. The roar of Aggie crowds have put goose pimples on me many times in my four years of athletic competition. The tremendous sup port of Aggie fans coupled with the high quality athletes in the Texas A&M sports program gives us an unbeatable combination in Aggie land. A&M’s Athletic Master Plan When I look at Texas A&M’s suc cess in the major sports recently, I think of the possibility that this might be a part of a master plan to have A&M show its best all-around face for the centennial, even in sports. The National Football League’s scouting force will probably camp out at Kyle Field next fall, because of people like: All-Americans Pat Thomas and Eddie Simonini, stellar performers Bubba Bean, Skip Walker, Richard Osborne, Carl Roaches, Glen Bujnoch, Bruce Welch, Garth Ten Napel and Jackie Williams — all members of the cen tennial class of 1976. An odd coinci dence? The basketball team of SWC championship caliber, anchored by junior college transfers Sonny Parker, Barry Davis, and Ray Roberts all will play their senior sea sons next year and they’ll be hard to stop. As one who has watched Aggie IBM mmmmm Club Sports The Texas A&M Lacrosse Club hosts a demonstration match with the newly-founded Texas Tech club this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The match is part of Parent’s weekend activities on the campus. Both the Maroon and White teams will combine to combat the Red Raider stickmen. A&M finished their league schedule with a 1-3 mark after open ing the season with a triumph over San Antonio. Last week the Aggies were nipped by Houston 10-7 with the fine goalie play of former All- American Les Matthews in the cage for Houston. All seeming to be ready to hit that high note in 1976. This year A&M finished 16th na tionally in football with an 8-3 re cord and won the SWC basketball crown with a record-setting 20-7 re cord. The baseball team is contend ing for a NCAA playoff spot with a record of 28-5 and the track team’s presence will surely be felt at the conference meet. Texas A&M’s whole athletic program has made a revolutionary turn and from all indications will be better in the 100th year of Aggieland’s existence. Master plan or coincidence, either way it looks like Texas A&M is going to get one whale of a 100th birthday present from its athletic program. were: Ken Hubbard (2), Wally Green (2), Greg Smith (2), and Ted Sauer with one score. ★★★ The Texas A&M Rugby club sec ond team won the Central Division Championship of the Texas Rugby Union last weekend to gain the fi nals of the Texas Rugby Union on April 26. The TAMU group defeated the Austin Hun’s second team 48-0 to win the central division. The Aggie club has lost only one game this year. They recently won the Austin Invitational Tournament. The first team won the first game of the central division playoffs de feating the Austin Blacks 13-9 but lost in the championship game to San Antonio, 15-3. This is the fifth year in a row that the TAMU club has been in the state championships. Rangers rap Sox, 7-3; Fergie wins CHICAGO (AP) — Mike Har grove doubled across two runs and Jim Spencer tripled home two more in a six-run fifth inning, helping Fergie Jenkins win his first game in three starts Thursday as the Texas Rangers defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-3. Jenkins, a 25-game winner last season, and loser Stan Bahnsen were locked in a scoreless game until the fifth when the Rangers erupted for their big inning.
