Page 6 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 1975 Not out to win \ Thomas sends token squad to Lafayette r TT TV M O A f V 1 TJT ^ i _ * • _ • ■ i t *-*•* ^ V-v ^-v ««1 /T/T J O ___ - By PAUL McGRATH Staff Sports Writer Coach Charles Thomas will not be seeking a victory this weekend as he sends only a token squad to the Southwestern Relays in Lafayette, La. “We re not going down there to win the thing or else we’d be taking the whole team,’’ said Thomas. The remainder of the Aggie track team will stay in College Station to work on academic subjects or use the free time to recuperate from injuries. The Southwestern Relays is the oldest track meet in the area, even more ancient than the Texas Relays. About a dozen college teams will be present including Lamar Tech and the University of Houston as the only other Texas teams entered plus the Bayou country schools of USL, Tulane, McNeese State, Northeast Louisiana and others. The meet is also the site of one of the largest high school meets in the region. The meet primarily consisted of relay events but the format has been changed this year to that of a regular track meet. Thomas is unsure if team scores and points will be tal leyed at the meet under the new system. Most schools just send a part of their squads in order to get their athletes extra competition in their specialty or to experiment in another event. This is basically what Thomas has in mind. A&M team captain, Doug Brodhead, will be running in the 100- and 220-yard dashes for the first time since his high school days in the Lafayette area. It would be a fitting homecoming if he won the events as he was the 100 and 220 champ his senior year. The Ag high jumpers failed to clear the opening height of 6-7 at the Texas Relays so Thomas will have them entered for some added work. Gerald D’Ambrosio will run the quarter as he competes for the second week in a row after coming off an injury. Bruce Smith is entered in the two-mile steeplechase and the three-mile run. Danny Jones and Kyle Heffner will compete in the steeplechase along with Smith. Manfred Kohrs and Charles Cottle will also compete in the three mile. Kohrs, Paul Goodman and Jacob Yemme will run the mile for the Aggies while Jim Brannen, Ron McGonigle and Alan Nordheim compete in the half mile. Along with D’Ambrosio in the 440 will be Terry Novak. Richard McGilvray will be the only Aggie hurdler present. The field events for A&M sees David Peterek and Pat Ruehle in the pole vault and Bill Newton and Keith Bucy throwing the javelin. Paul Miller will test his talents in the long jump. A&M will have no entrants in the shot put, discus and triple jump. Thomas will not have a sprint relay quartet but may have a mile relay team competing. “It should be a real good meeb” said Thomas. “I just hope the weather will be favorable. Thomas will be the only A&M coach at the meet as his assistant, Ted Nelson, is on a recruiting trip. Updating the Aggies’ injury situa tion, Thomas said sprinter Sam Dierschke will be ready for next week and has “been looking really good in practice.’ Robert Harris is coming along and will be ready to compete again soon, he said. Hur dler Scottie Jones is working out but can’t hurdle yet as he can’t gethis leg high enough. Thomas said Jones was getting into good shape. A&M travels to meet their rivals on the Brazos next weekend as tfe compete in a dual meet with (lie Baylor Bears. Following that meet the Aggies will prepare foroneof the top meets in the nation, tit Drake Relays. Aggie netters have tough weekend ahead of them By NICK VOINIS Staff Sports Writer The Texas Aggie tennis team has a tough task in store for this weekend beginning with a dual match against Lamar University today. The Cardinals are sitting atop the Southland Conference and will be a tough team to beat according to Coach Richard Barker. Saturday the Southern Methodist Mustangs invade College Station to take on the hometown boys in a dual Southwest Conference match. SMU, the nation’s fourth best team, is led by the SWC’s No. 1 singles player, George Hardie. “They have a tremendous team with fantastic talent,” said Barker. “We ll have to play extremely well just to stay in the match with them.” The Mustangs should contend with Texas for the SWC crown. They defeated the University of Houston, a preseason pick earlier in the campaign, 5-4. The Aggies meanwhile, had a tougher time with the Cougars, losing to them 8-1. The Aggies haven’t played a home match in almost a month, and Barker is happy to be playing these tough teams in Aggieland. “The kids are looking forward to playing them (SMU). It will be a challenge and they know it will be tough,” Barker said. “Were capable of giving them a good match.” Wednesday, the Aggies lost a tough match to Texas 7-2. Barker said he thought his players looked good and he wasn’t disappointed with the way they played. “We had a bunch of close matches but didn’t win them,” the coach said. Texas’ Gary Flock defeated Aggie Billy Hoover in the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-4. Hoover and Charles Emley played in the No. 1 doubles match, losing to the Longhorn’s Stewart Keller and Graham, 6-2, 7-6. “Were out of the SWC race as far as the championship is concerned, but we could have a say-so as to who wins it,” Barker said. Barker will be going with his usual lineup of Bill Wright, Hoover, Emley, Tom Courson, Mark Sil- berman and John Kirwan. He said some minor changes could occur if some of the other players are hot. The matches begin at 1:30. Next week the team will travel to Huntsville on Friday, to play Sam Houston State, then return home to take on Texas Christian Saturday. Barnett leads Knicks past Rockets, 106-96 NEW YORK (AP) — Aggressive Jim Barnett came off the bench and sparked a decisive second-quarter spree and Walt Frazier scored 26 points, helping the New York Knicks beat the Houston Rockets 106-96 Thursday night. It squared their National Basketball Associa tion playoff series at one victory apiece. The final game in the teams’ best-of-three Eastern Conference opening-round series will be played at Houston Saturday afternoon and will be nationally televised. The hard-driving Barnett was in serted into the game in the second period after teammate Earl Monroe was tagged for a technical foul and removed by Coach Red Holzman. Calvin Murphy made the technical for Houston, cutting New York’s lead to 31-28. Then in the next 6:09, the fast breaking, accurate-shooting and defense-minded Knicks outscored the Rockets 20-6 for a commanding 51-34 bulge. Barnett began the spurt with a driving layup and con tributed nine points during the stretch. After that, the Rockets, 99-84 winners in the opening game at Houston Tuesday night, never got closer than the final margin. Barnett finished with 15 points in the well-balanced New York attack, Monroe added 14, Harthorne Wingo had 13 and Phil Jackson col lected 12. Rudy Tomjanovich led the Rock ets with 22 points 16 in the second half, and Murphy wound up with 20, only four over the last two periods. Barnes and Malone return to ac tion Friday night when New York is at St. Louis and Denver is at Utah. Barnes, the ABA Rookie of the Year, credited experience and a new attitude with making him “a seasoned pro.” There was a time when I was just playing for myself, ” Barnes said. “A little time and a little experience hi' changed me. Now I’m playing for the coach, the team, the owners, the people in St. Louis and me. Barnes had problems earlier in the season when he jumped the team, but that appears to have been the “old” Marvin Barnes. “I think he’ll be in a class soon with Erving and McGinnis — and that’s as good as there is,” St. Louis Coach Bob MacKinnon said in com paring the former Providence All- American with superstars Julius Erving of the Nets and George McGinnis of the Stars. The 20-year-old Malone has had to overcome the lack of experience and heavy pressure, both the result of his coming directly into the ABA from high school. Wednesday’s performance was the high point of a solid year for the shy, 6-foot-ll center from Peters burg, Va.
