Bleu Cheese Eleven games remain THE BATTALION THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 1975 Page 7 Texas Tech visits A&M as SWC race narrows By DAVID WALKER Staff Sports Writer The Texas Aggies have three weeks left in the 1975 regular sea son. In those three weeks they play 11 games, nine in Southwest Con ference play and two non conference games. O’Donovan gives praise (continued from p. 6) court with no ice, no cups, etc. “Bands?” I asked. “Of course, we want the Band,” said Shelby. The 1974/75 TEAM was not al ways as good nor as bad as they looked. They were poor at home against Tech but Gerald Myers and squad were truly great; we had a bad case of “NERVITIS” against a gigan tic fast Cincy five. I believe they might have beaten us anyway, but being unable to run away from them during their first ten minutes of jit ters was enough. We learned much and with a nucleus for next year re turning, we will be back. To win in a non-individual sport, one must become part of a unit and if I can borrow from John Wooden yet again, it is that “the MOST im portant ingredient of stardom, is the rest of the TEAM. ” This is true for players, substitutes, even coaches! No year goes by for any intelligent human being without learning something. I know that Shelby has already a new winning formula with the Kissinger-like traveler, Reuther, scouting the country for a good BIG man (low post) and a 6 4” guard! Norman will then be able to rest — a few minutes — with his lovely pa tient wife, and Janice Metcalf will send Shelby black bass fishing for relaxation! Bob Gobin will learn and learn and someday will be as calm as John Wooden or as superb a play- by-play analyst as I have ever heard. You should listen to him someday! We bid “adios” to Big Ced (Ced ric Joseph) — a MAN at last and I mean that from my heart — who was plagued by injuries most of the year. His game here against Tech and his cloud-touching rebounding against TCU and SMU in Dallas were super efforts. Leaving too, will be Jerry Mercer, Chuck Tone (to quote Barry Davis “Man, that dude can shoot, ” and that he can), Webb Wil liams and “Mr. Clutch himself, Mike Floyd. Leaving also is my dear friend, team psychologist and manager Stafford (Stanley another fine mess you’ve gotten us into) Connor. I ex pect to see No. 52 (John Thornton) again and again. Sonny P. and Barry D., both one-for-one in SWC play will be back to do it again, along with Ray Roberts and company. To the former writer from The Batt, Jerry Wizig, now with the “Houston Chronicle who always asked Barry, win or lose, why and how it hap pened — we thank you too. For Barry, who has known the game since he was four and does not smile a lot but when he does, that big dude from Galveston looks magnifico! Come September, Coach Emory Bellard and his “Top Ten” crew will continue Shelby’s NEW MOTTO: “Winning is a fig ure of speech, at Texas A&M.” Let it be our cry, AGGIES! EPILOGUE I feel I speak for all Aggies every where when I say that we deeply appreciate the treatment we re ceived in Lubbock for the playoffs. A special thanks goes out to the Saddle Tramps, Tech rooters, who greeted us at the airport, red carpet beneath our feet. Their crowd roared with the same vicious pulsa tion that an Aggie-Tech game could elicit. Coach Gerald Myers, boyish and self-assured, did us proud. He, like all of us who know, too was aware he could have been elsewhere. We thank you sincerely, Coach Myers. The many Aggie students and their wives and dates who drove to Lubbock plus, of course, the fabul ous former student body of the “Dustlands,” what can one say but, “Go raibh mile maith agaibh” (1,000 thanks to you, in Gaelic, it being almost St. Patricks Day when I wrote this article). A loss was not in the Metcalf/Reuther/Gobin game-plan, believe me, and don’t forget come Easter Monday, March 31: of those playoff teams there will be losers, and the further one climbs the lad der, the harder is the fall! It happens every spring!! Meanwhile let our heroes wear the SWC crown — NO Mickey Mouse affair to anyone ex cept some writers — with honor and dignity and we, the true fans, will always remember the 1974-75 winter that was the Aggies. BATT SPORTS, LIKE A GOOD STEAK, A MEDIUM THAT IS RARE . . . Gerard A. O’Donovan The conference games left for the Ags are home games with Texas Tech and Texas and three on the road with Rice. The non-conference games are on April 14 against Northeast Louisiana at Kyle Field. The Aggies are 24-4 on the season and the feeling is that if the Ags have a 30-win season that will be good enough for a NCAA playoff birth. The Aggies are currently trailing Texas by three games in the loss column and play the Longhorns on the final weekend of the season. Aggie left fielder and leading hitter Al Thurmond summed up the Ag gies’ situation yesterday, “We’ve got too many games between now and the Texas series to start thinking about just Texas.” Those games start tomorrow when the Red Raiders of Texas Tech come to town for three games. Friday’s single game starts at 3 p.m. and the Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. Clint Thomas will pitch for the Ags in the Friday single game with Hoot Gibson and David Lockett pitching in the Saturday doub leheader. The batting order for the Aggies with season and conference aver ages: Mike Frazier (.446; .436), cf; Tommy Hawthorne (.340, .283), c; Bill Raymer (.330, .345), rf; Jim Bratsen (.337, .333), lb; Mike Schraeder (.370, .412), 2b; Kirk Campbell (.404, .379), 3b; Al Thurmond (.376, .474), Robert Bonner (.239, .238), dh; Fred Russ (.188, .155), ss.
