If he hasn’t heard, he soon will—the girls at A&M are really into their new sports program. Maggies are now offered a chance to compete in 10 inter collegiate sports—quite a step up from three short years ago when there was no women’s athletic program whatsoever at A&M. The thirty-year old Kay Don is the Women’s Athletic Director, and she’s the epitome of enthusi asm. With her girlish freckles and big smile, Ms. Don said that al though they’ve experienced the problems any young organization faces, they have no gripes about their position on this basically male-oriented campus. The support the girls have re ceived from the student body has grown significantly this past year, Ms. Don said, and they expect it will continue as their program im proves. She’s especially pleased with the new financial backing they’ve gotten, which has come largely out of the Athletic Department’s pocket. From a measly two hun dred dollars a year (from the MSC) along with various dona tions, the program has gone from rags to riches with their new $40,000 annual budget. “The money is being used to build the program into one that can compete with the other schools,” Ms. Don explained. For that reason, they are holding back on giving scholarships to the girls Volunteers earn cash as caddies Hey Aggies!! Want to earn a $5 to $10 tip and get some refreshing exercise in the process? If so, you can volunteer your services as a caddie in the athletic department’s annual News Media Golf Tournament on Friday, April 25. You can get full details by signing up for caddie duties in room 204, G. Rollie White Coli seum. until they have the quality pro gram worthy of recruiting ath letes. That day will soon be here, Ms. Don said she believes, and expects to be awarding the female athletes financial aid within the next year or two. As for Ms. Don’s own financial status, she is paid by the Univer sity only for the P.E. classes she instructs, giving the hours she spends working with the program voluntarily, as do the rest of the staff. But even on this score, Ms. Don says she accepts it as one of the drawbacks involved with a young organization. Ms. Don is in no way a wo men’s libber, dreaming of the day girls will take over Cain Hall or any drastic equalization of the sexes in the sports program here. Instead, she expressed high regard for the men’s athletic program. “They’ve had sports for a long time already and they had to be gin like we are and gradually work up, too,” Ms. Don said. A&M is a member of the Texas Association of Intercollegiate Ath letics for Women (TAIA\^ and also the national association. These groups are in charge of championship competition on the state and national level. Various sports offered to girls are badminton, basketball, soft- INTERSTATE UNIVERSITY SQUARE SHOPPING CENTER an intimate experience on film THE BEATLES “HARD DAYS NIGHT”, “HELP”, YELLOW SUBMARINE” & “LET IT BE THIS SATURDAY NIGHT ONLY ALL SEATS $1.25 —BACK TO BACK—ALL FOUR FILMS— ALL NIGHT LONG PRESENTED BY KTAM RADIO ii y k i r i xj 11 Tin in rrr J Bartow unafraid of Bruin record LOS ANGELES (AP) — New basketball coach Gene Bartow said Thursday he was at “complete peace of mind in replacing John Wooden who has accomplished miracles” at UCLA. The 44-year-old Bartow, heading west from Illinois where he was head coach just one year, said, “The UCLA record doesn’t worry me be cause John is such a tremendous person. I hope we can win and it will be reconizable very quickly if we don’t.” Teams coached by the 64-year-old Wooden, who an nounced his retirement, have won the National Collegiate Athletic As sociation championship 10 of the last 12 years. Athletic Director J.D. Morgan who personally was responsible for choosing Bartow, told a news con ference, “This is a joyous and sad occasion for me personally. It is sad to see John Wooden leave but joy ous to have Gene Bartow as the new head basketball coach.” Wooden did not attend the con ference and Morgan said it was the retiring coach’s own decision. Bartow thus had the full attention of the audience at Pauley Pavilion where UCLA plays its home games. “No one replaces John Wooden as John Wooden,” Bartow said. “His 10 national championships was a miracle in itself. I hope to keep the high quality basketball program going at UCLA. “John said he didn’t want to retire without leaving the next man some pretty good players and he did just that. ” Returning to the UCLA varsity are three starters from the NCAA championship club-Rich Washing ton who was voted the tournament’s most valuable player, Andre McCarter and Marques Johnson. Returning also is Ralph Drol- linger, the 7-foot-l No. 1 reserve who was instrumental in the title tournament victories over Louis ville and Kentucky when UCLA first won 75-74 in overtime and then beat the Wildcats 92-85 for the championship. Bartow said that had he left Il linois, where four years remained on his contract, to go anywhere but UCLA that Athletic Director Cecil Coleman might have had second thoughts. “But UCLA is UCLA in basket ball just as Notre Dame is Notre Dame in football,” Bartow said. “I think most people feel the same way. Cecil could understand. He is a friend of mine. ” Neither Morgan nor Bartow would discuss terms of the contract which no doubt was a multiyear pact.
