Over the wall THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 1975 Page 3 Electing editor like electing pilot By CINDY MACIEL Staff Writer Please, if there is anyone out there who knows of a school (just one, I won’t be picky) that is not having trouble selecting (by any method) an editor for its school newspaper, let me know. At TRINITY UNIVERSITY, the dominating subject of a recent Board of Publications meeting was the method of selection of the TRINITONIAN editor. The question came from a discus sion of who would be responsible in case of legal action taken against the student newspaper. Two student senators argued that since part of the student activity fee pays the editor’s salary, students should have a say in who gets that salary. Both called for an all-school election of editor. Dan Rosen, serving his second short ght l ould ■ i .%■ m- ;ti i ! r .1 year on the Trinity Board of Publica tions, argued that an all-school elec tion for editor would turn the race into a popularity contest. A professor at TAMU says elect ing the editor of the newspaper is like electing the pilot of the airplane you are in. Panties vs. jocks War cries of “Take ’em off and throw ’em down’’, and “We want a moon-shot” re sounded from the walls of the women’s dorms Tuesday night as the local male resi dents staged a pantie raid. The raid came after the women pro voked the men by de manding their jock straps. Photo by Glen Johnson lil A. ' "" ‘9 International PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Amid farewell tears, exploding shellfire and parting verbal shots from Russia and India, President Lon Nol departed Tuesday into virtual exile in an eleventh-hour effort to clear the way for talks with the Communist-backed Khmer Rouge. On the battlefronts, military sources said the government operation against the rebel rocket belt around the airport was “temporarily suspended" so troops could defend the capital. Communist-led forces zeroed in on Neak Luong, the government’s last stronghold on the Mekong River 32 miles southeast of Phnom Penh, and Battambang, the country’s sec ond largest city, 180 miles northwest of Phnom Penh. II National WASHINGTON (AP) — Investigators have uncovered another half million dollars of overcharges for fuel oil sold to electric utilities, bringing the known total to more than $1.2 million in only four of the 200 cases under investigation, a federal official said Tuesday. Investigators suspect a total of $19.7 million may have been overcharged on utility fuel. ★★★ WASHINGTON (AP) — A pool of 44 prospective jurors was chosen Tuesday for the case of “United States vs. John B. Connally,” the second time in American history that a former Cabinet officer has gone on trial for bribery. From the pool of 30 women and 14 men, final selection of a jury is expected Wednesday morning, with opening arguments to follow immediately. ★★★ WASHINGTON (AP) — President Ford declared parts of Texas and Arkansas disaster areas Tuesday eligible for federal aid because of tornadoes which hit the states last week. Thomas P. Duane, administration of the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration, said damage in Arkansas’ Bradley county made it eligible for designation to receive the aid. Duane said the agency will establish a disaster assistance center at the high school gym at Lefors, Tex. State HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston jury found convict Ignacio Cuevas guilty Tuesday of capital murder in the shooting death last summer of Julia Standley during the Huntsville prison . shootout. ★★★ AUSTIN (AP) — Estimates of taxable property values in each Texas school district might frighten some legislators who must vote on reforming the system for financing public educa tion, a House subcommittee chairman said Tuesday. The market value estimates, which include automobiles, untaxed by most districts, were placed before the House school finance subcommittee. Market value of taxable property is likely to be the sole measure of a district’s ability to pay basic school costs, with the state making up the difference. mmmmmm mm At TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNI VERSITY there is a proposed rate hike for single-occupancy rooms. Now they are only paying $60 per semester more than a double occupancy room. At other schools the rate for single rooms is automat ically one-and-a-half times the double-occupancy rate. ★★★ The SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY Student Se nate passed a “Right to Breathe” re solution last week. It was a ban on smoking in classes. The resolution was created to protect the rights of non-smokers affected or annoyed by smoke in the classroom. It will be stressed in class by each professor rather than enforced as the bill had originally called for. This change came after punish ments or penalties for students could not be decided upon. ★★★ SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY became the third member of the State Senior College System to allow liquor in all upper- class dormitory rooms. SWT followed the lead of Sul Ross State and Sam Houston State Uni versities. The fourth system school, Angelo State, is not expected to permit on-campus consumption in the near future.
