SH/C baseball race on line THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 1975 Page 5 Texas A&M, Horned Frogs fight for survival By DAVID WALKER Staff Sports Writer The Texas Aggies and TCU Homed Frogs meet today and to morrow in a battle for survival in the 1975 Southwest Conference baseball race. The Aggies are 6-3 in the SWC while TCU is a game back of the Ags with a 5-4 mark. A&M and TCU were picked to battle Texas for the SWC championship but now one of the schools face virtual elimination only half way through the confer ence season. Texas is 12-0 in the conference at the midway point for them, and they host Arkansas this weekend. Texas has played the bottom four teams in the conference, Texas Tech, Houston, Rice and SMU. Nine of the 12 games have been played in Austin. The Aggies on the other hand will have played nine of their first 12 games on the road. The second half of the season finds the Aggies playing nine of 12 at Kyle Field with only a three game series with lowly Rice in Houston the only road games left. The Aggies feel that the TCU series is the key to their SWC sea son. A three game sweep of the Frogs plus a little help from some of the other SWC shools against Texas would make the season ending series with the Longhorns the championship series. Before the Aggies can begin thinking about anyone else they must get past the tough Frogs. TCU is 18-5 on the season. The Frogs are led by first baseman Tommy Crain who is their leading hitter with a .364 average. Center- fielder Gene Burton is the next highest Frog hitter with a .316 mark. (AP) — Mike Mitchell, who led Western Texas College to the National Junior College Athletic Associa tion basketball championship last week, has been named coach of the year. Fry expects 70 gridders for practice DENTON (AP ) — North Texas State, which has scheduled four bowl teams for the 1975 football sea son, begins spring drills Tuesday with some 70 candidates expected to report to Coach Hayden Fry. The annual Green-White game concludes training on May 3. “No doubt this will he an ex tremely important spring for us,” said Fry, who has 15 players who started six or more games last fall. Among those returning on of fense includes quarterback Ken Washington of Port Arthur who ac counted for more than 1,500 yards as a freshman last fall. The two-year college from Snyder, Texas, won the title in its first trip to the championship tour nament. Bob Miller of Western Texas was named to the NJCAA s eight-member all-American junior college team. PHOENIX (AP ) — Manager Wes Westrum, perhaps because he participated in two miracles as a Giants player, speaks with convic tion when he says, “We re aiming for first place.” He doesn’t even think it will take a miracle this time to turn the San Francisco Giants a fifth place finisher last season, into a contender— just some good execu tion offundamentals by what figures to be major league baseball’s youngest team. Bobby Murcer, at 28, probably will be the team’s oldest starter. The right fielder obtained in the winter trade of Bobby Bonds to the New York Yankees also is one of the many new faces on a new-look San Fran cisco roster. “We gave away about 20 games when I was around last year, with things like base-running mistakes, failing to hit cutoff men on throws shouldn’t have been hit,” West rum said. The pitching improved but the Giants still threatened to dislodge the San Diego Padres from last place before the season ended with Westrum’s team 30 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, National League West champions. Plans for the 1975 comeback de pend heavily on starting pitchers Jim Barr, Mike Caldwell and John D’Acquisto, a young threesome which produced 39 victories last season, and big hitting years by such players as Murcer, Gary Matthews, Steve Ontiveros and Chris Speier. Westrum is leaning toward rookie Marc Hill, who was a St. Louis Car dinals’ farmhand last season, as the starting catcher. Former San Diego Padre Derrel Thomas is the new second baseman, former Dodger Von Joshua is challenging Garry Maddox in center field and 23 year-old Gary Thomasson is run ning ahead of the more experienced Ed Goodson in the first base com petition. Speier, the shortstop who has been on the last two National League All-Star teams, and left fiel der Matthews could be the only players in the opening day lineup who also started the 1974 season. Matthews was the team’s top hit ter last year, with a .287 average, 16 homers and 82 runs batted in. Westrum is hoping that improved pitching, defense and base-running will make up for the apparent lack of power on this year’s team. Baseball game cancelled due to wet grounds Thursday’s scheduled double- header between the Aggies and Minnesota was cancelled because of wet grounds. The games will not be made up. The Aggies are on the road today and to-' morrow to play TCU. 1 by Oral GALVESTON, Tx. (AP) — 1 as Tech shot a six-under te — Tex- team total 282 Thursday to take a 15- stroke lead over Oral Roberts in the Galveston Island Sports Spec tacular Golf Tournament. The Red Raiders were paced by Kent Wood’s four-under-par 68 fol lowed by Steve Long and Jeff Mitchell’s one-under par 71s over the Galveston Country Club Course. Jeff Mitchell of Tech maintained a four-stroke lead for medalist honors over teammate Steve Long with his three-under 213 three-day total. Tech leads with an 869 followed by Oral Roberts’ 884, and Nebraska was third with 899 followed by Tulsa’s 905. Texas Wesleyan posted a 297 total to increase its lead to 10 shots with a three-day 891 total in the college division. Southern Colorado was 901. The tournament ends with 18 holes Friday. Notre Dame won the tennis seg ment of the Spectacular by sweep ing two out of three matches with Bowling Green and Indiana State. Oral Roberts won two of three doubles matches with Indiana State and finished second behind the Fighting Irish. The leading winner on the Frog staff is Tomlin with a 3-0 sea son record. The Aggie team batting average is 95 points higher than the TCU aver age. The Ags are hitting at a .310 clip for the season. Kirk Campbell is the leading Aggie batsman with a hefty .443 average. Mike Frazier is the next highest Aggie hitter with a .384 average. Just as the batting stats don’t compare the pitching stats are op posite also. The Aggie team ERA is 2.30. David Lockett is the leading Ag pitcher with a 1.78 ERA and a 5-0 record. James “Hoot” Gibson is next with a 1.82 ERA and a 5-1 re cord. Clint Thomas will start for the Aggies in Friday’s game with Hoot Gibson and David Lockett going in the Saturday twin bill. The Friday game starts at 3:00 and the Saturday doubleheader starts at 1:00. There will be no local radio of the game. KC, Busby zaps Astros in no-hitter FORT MYERS (AP) — Steve Busby, who has pitched two no hitters in his brief major league career, stopped Houston without a hit for seven innings Thursday as the Kansas City Royals held the As tros to one hit over-all in a 2-0 exhib ition baseball victory. Skip Jutze broke up the no-hitter in the ninth off reliever Lindy McDaniel. The only base runner against Busby was Greg Gross, who got a leadoff walk in the first and ad vanced to third on a balk and a wild pickoflf throw. Busby struck out the other three Astros he faced in the first inning and finished with six strikeouts. Bushy threw no-hitters against Detroit in 1973 and Milwaukee last year. The Royals broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning against James Rodney Richard, Houston’s 6-foot-8 fifeballer. Hal McRae walked and scored on Harmon Killebrew’s double.
