Now stand 18-4 on season Page 10 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, MARCH 27,1975 Aggie baseballers take two from Minnesota By DAVID WALKER Staff Sports Writer The Texas Aggies ran their season record to 18-4 yesterday by beating the Minnesota Gophers, the wind and the rain. Playing in almost impossible weather conditions the Aggies swept the Gophers by scores of 5-4, and in an abbreviated contest, 7-3. The second game was called after five innings because of the ele ments. In the first game the Aggies came from behind twice in stopping the Gophers 5-4. Minnesota jumped in front in the first inning when shortstop Joe Kor- dosky led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out be fore scoring on a James Gibson wild pitch. The Aggies knotted the score in their half of the second when, with two outs, Al Thurmond sent a hard shot through the left side of the Gopher infield for a single. Thur mond was followed by Robert Bon ner who doubled. With runners on second and third the Minnesota pitcher uncorked a wild pitch to score Thurmond from third to tie the game. The tie didn’t last long though as Minnesota came back with a three run third inning. With two out Mike Bruss singled. He was followed by Jeff Neutzling who had a bad- bounce double over centerfielder Mike Frazier’s head. On the play Bruss scored. Right fielder John Degel was next up for the Gophers and sent a long shot over the 365 sign in left field for a two run home run and a 4-1 lead. The lead didn’t last long for the Gophers as the Aggies came back to tie in their half of the third. Mike Frazier laid a bunt down the third base line that the Minnesota pitcher misplayed for an error. Austin University heads a 16-team field Thursday opening play in the Texas Association of In tercollegiate Athletics for Women state basketball tournament. SFA, owning a 28-7 record, earned the top seat after winning the East Zone title two weeks ago. Texas A&M 23-7 is seeded second and Baylor 28-10 is the third seed. Probably the top opening round game Thursday will pit A&M, an overtime winner over Baylor in the Central Zone finals, against the Wayland Baptist Queen Bees. The Bees, unseeded despite a 12-0 record, is the junior varsity team to WBC’s perennial national power Hutcherson Flying Queens. The Queen Bees won the TAIAW state meet a year ago, and advanced to the state tournament this year with a pair of wins over West Texas State in the West Zone tournament. Other opening round games Thursday will find Stephen F. Au stin vs. Texas Wesleyan 19-10; Baylor vs. U.T. Austin 15-8; Lamar 19-9 vs. Southwest Texas State 24-11; West Texas State 17-13 vs. U.T. Arlington 11-12; Texas A&I 10-9 vs. Abilene Christian 12-14; Houston 8-14 vs.^Tarleton State 12-11; North Texas State 21-13 vs. Sam Houston State 5-9; and A&M vs. Wayland Baptist. Host West Texas State will be playing in the state meet for the first time in four years. Thursday’s opening round games will be played at both the Buffalo Fieldhouse and the WTSU Ac tivities Center. All winner’s bracket games will then be played at the Fieldhouse. Kirk Campbell was the winning pitcher for the Aggies. His record is 4-1 on the year. In the second game the Aggies once again had to-play catch up. The Gophers opened the game with a two run first inning. The Aggies cut it in half in the bottom of the inning when Mike Frazier and Tommy Hawthorne led off with singles. Bill Raymer sacrificed the runners to up to second and third and Frazier scored on a Jim Bratsen grounder. The Aggies got the lead in the second. Fred Russ led off with a! walk. Kirk Campbell got a single on the hit and run with Russ moving to third. Tech leads Galveston golf match GALVESTON, Tex. (AP) — Texas Tech overhauled Oral Roberts to take the second round lead in the Galveston Island Sports Spectacular Golf Tournament Wednesday. Jeff Mitchell ofTech stayed ahead in the medalist race with a two- under 142 two-day total. Jay Fuller ton of Arkansas-Little Rock had the day’s hottest round with a three- under par 69 in winds gusting up to 35 miles an hour. Fullerton had a 145 total. Tech has a 587 total while Oral Roberts is 588 over the Galveston Country Club Course. Texas Wes leyan is 295. The tournament concludes Fri day. 3600 Old College Rd. Min nesota scored a single run to tie it in the top of the third but the Aggies got the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Campbell led off with a single. After a Biersner strike out Frazier singled. Tommy Hawthorne walked to load the bases. Campbell scored when the Minnesota catcher tried to pick Hawthorne off first and threw the ball into the dugout. Raymer walked to load the bases and Jim Bratsen forced in a run when he walked. Mike Schraeder followed with his third sacrifice fly of the day to score the Aggies final run in the 7-3 victory. David Lockett was the winning pitcher for the Aggies who stretched their season record to 18-4. Min nesota dropped to 2-6. The two schools play another doubleheader today at Kyle Field starting at 1:00.
