Rollie White Coliseum NO CAMERAS OR RECORDING DEVICES WILL BE ADMITTED The weightlifting team swept to its second straight State Collegiate Powerlifting Championship Satur day at Deware Field House. The Aggies finished first in three events and grabbed two second place events. North Texas State Univer sity was second with two first place finishes and McMurray College and Prairie View A&M tied for third position. Bruce Campbell, Stan Peters, and Doug Wood captured the blue ribbon in the 114, 123, and 132 lb. divisions respectively. Mario Mar tinez was second in the 123 lb. class and Larry O’Flinn followed Wood in the 132 weight class. Defending champion Larry Cozart was nosed out by The University ofTexas’ John Hodsdn in the 1481b. division. Jerry Siepert of Tarleton State was the outstanding light-weight individual with a lift total of 1255 lbs. The out standing heavyweight lifter was Dan Theus of Richland College. His lift total was 1395 lbs. Other indi vidual winners included Chesea Lepley and Steve Brown of North Texas State, Charles Perkins of Tyler Junior College, and Larry Childress of East Texas State Uni versity. A&M’s Al Guidry, who won last year’s 242 lb. weight class, finished second to Steve Brown. The team will compete next in the National Meet April 5 and 6 at Northwestern University. Those on the team not competing at Nationals will lift in the Gulf States AAU Reg ional Meet in Beaumont March 29. Emley beat Rob Bettauer, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in the No. 4 singles match of a Friday afternoon dual with Pan American. Coach Richard Barker was pleased. “We didn’t play that bad,” he said of the 7-2 win to the Broncs. “They have a real fine team. They haven’t lost a match yet. ” In the No. 1 singles match on Fri day Paco Ceron beat Senior Bill Wright, 7-6, 6-4. In Saturday’s match at Trinity Wright succumbed to David King 6-4, 6-1. Bill Hoover, No. 2 ranked Ag fell in succession to Pan Am’s Antonio Hartman, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 and Trinity’s Bill Matyastik 6-4, 6-4. Emley was beaten on the second day of play by TU’s Bill Scanlon, 6-1, 6-1. Mark Silberman was ousted on consecutive days by Ricardo Eynaudi of Pan American 6-4, 6-2 and Trinity’s Mike Grant 6-1, 6-2. Carlos Eynaudi of Pan Am defeated Tom Courson 6-2, 6-4. On Saturday Jim Timmis outlasted Courson 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 6 match John Kirwan lost on Friday to Rob Hubbard, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 and on Saturday to Mark Taylor 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. In doubles, the Ags brought home their only other weekend win courtesy Kirwan and Silberman who racked up a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Ricky Garcia and Jesus Cruz of Pan Am in the No. 3 match. Kirwan and Silberman failed to repeat their performance on Satur day though, falling to Trinity’s duo of Brad Kamp and Dave Benson, 6-4, 7-6. The No. 1 Ag team of Hoover and Emley suffered losses to Pan Am’s R. Eynaudi and Hartmen, 7-5, 6-4 and to Trinity’s Matyastik and Tim mis 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. In the No. 2 dou bles, Wright and Courson lost out to Ceron and C. Eynaudi, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 on Friday and to Scanlon and Taylor 6-3, 6-3. The Ags drop to 1-2 on the season with the losses and are 11-16 in matches in three duals thus far this year. Charles Emley leads the team with two wins and one loss, while ffesjiman Don Farmer owns one win and no losses. Wright is 0-2 for the year. All other players are 1-2 thus far. The team of Silberman and Kir wan lead the Ags in doubles with two wins and one loss. As for Pan Am Barker said, “I knew they were tough but they were better than I thought.” “We didn’t play as well against Trinity as we did against Pan Am, but we got a lot of experience. I wasn’t disappointed.” The Ags travel next to the Corpus Christi Invitational where they will take on strong Oklahoma State in the first round at 8:30 Thursday morning.
