V/z MILES PAST E. BYPASS 846-1126 Woman director wants quality Though Mrs. Wilmer Smith is ac customed to receiving honors for her activities, she was surprised when Gov. Briscoe named her to be on the Board of Directors of the TAMU system in 1973. She was on the Committee for Outlying Academic Campuses but being elevated to the Board of Di rectors left her “disturbed but hon ored.” In addition she served on the Century Council where she sug gested that women be allowed on campus. Being a member of the Board has been very rewarding, said Smith, but when she first attended a meet ing of the Building Committee, “They got far too technical.” In the future Smith would like to see, along with increased enroll ment, an increase in the quality ol education. She’d also appreciate the completion of construction going on all over campus. She justified the construction of Once called Judas Reynolds - ‘limit growth’ the campus perimeter as a means of giving the campus a feeling of unity. Smith says the changes at A&M are for the better. She noticed that students have become more expres sive of their views. “I see a lot of letters in the Battalion. That’s fine. I don’t object to students expressing their views, but sometimes they border on extreme negativity,” says Smith. She has been closely associated with Texas Tech University. Her daughter and grandchildren have graduated from Tech and her hus band was president of Tech’s Exe s Association. Thus whenever there is a game between Tech and A&M she feels “rather torn. ” “I try to support the better team,’’she says, “and A&M has won the last two Tech-A&M games I saw. ” Smith was born Lola Wheeler near Lubbock. A 1939 graduate of Texas Tech University, she has taught school in Cooper and New Home School district. She has also served on several na tional and international committees on homemaking and consumer af fairs. Joe Reynolds, Houston lawyer, is thought to be a modern day Judas by a former Baylor classmate. Reynolds graduated from Baylor Law School in 1947. He has been on the A&M Board of Directors for three years. During the interview, Reynolds said A&M’s tremendous growth may become a problem. “We’ve got to decide how we can limit it (growth),” he said. “Who am I to say a student can’t go here?” He would not want to screen people entirely by grades, he said. “I’d hate to see us become an egg-head school where they just get the ivory tower people,” he said. Male yell leaders is one tradition Reynolds doesn’t want to see broken. Yell leaders in white is one of the things that makes A&M dis tinctive, he said. “I don’t want to be another Uni versity of Texas, ” he said. “One of those is enough.” When the interview turned to construction on campus, Reynolds said the MSC is “a work of art” and criticism of it reflects lack of ap preciation. His only comment on the blue water tower was “it’s different.” Reynolds, a former Marine, is a partner in the law firm of Reynolds, White, Allen, and Cook which formed in 1966. He began practic ing law in 1949.
