Hot 1 Baltimore Good show not accepted By RODNEY HAMMACK TV Reviewer Several years ago, ABC had the creators of “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in” produce a similar show as a mid-season replacement. The re sult was a half-hour show called “Turn-on” that actually outdid its model in frenetic energy. “Tum-on” made its debut at 7:30 on a Wednesday night. In the fol lowing days, pubic reaction to the show was so adverse that it was yanked before its second episode — gaining the dubious distinction of being the shortest running series in television history. In the intervening years, prog rams such as “All in the Family,” “M*A*S*H“ and “Maude” have al most reduced the content of “Turn-on” to the level of “The Elec tric Company. “Turn-on, at its worst, consisted of a postman talk ing about a “damn dog” and semi erotic tattoos on a go-go girl. History now seems to be repeat ing itself for ABC. “Turn-on” was the network’s quest for some of the magic of NBC’s high-rated “Laugh- in.’’ Now ABC is after the magic of producer Norman Lear that keeps CBS’ “All in the Family’ and “Maude” in Nielson’s top ten. The result this time is a mid-season entry from Norman Lear called “Hot l Baltimore.” Even the public reaction is strangely familiar. Three ABC affiliates refused to run the premier episode Jan. 24, including WJZ-TV in Baltimore. At least nine other stations moved the show to a time slot later than its scheduled 8:00 (CST) berth. The two other stations who re jected the show were WDHO-TV in Toledo, Ohio and WJKS-TV in Jack sonville, Florida. Among the ABC affiliates that delayed the broadcast was KVI1-TV in Amarillo. “Hot l Baltimore” is Norman Lear’s second series to join the sec ond season schedule. The other is another spin-off of “All in the Fam ily” called “The Jeffersons,” solidly entrenched in CBS’ Saturday com edy lineup that also includes top ten veterans such as “All in the Family,” “Mary Tyler Moore” and “Bob Ne- whart.” “The Jeffersons” hovered around the number four spot in the Neilson ratings while “Hot 1 Balti- more premiered at 32. “Norman Lear is just testing how far he can go, ’ says Win Baker, pres ident of Baltimore’s WJZ. “He’s in vading new areas of content, but the show has no redeeming value.” Despite Baker s description, ABC is not airing pornography, al though the list of characters sounds like a Russ Myer movie — two pros titutes, a homosexual couple, a dirty old man, a batty spinster and miscel laneous society drop outs. Hooker jokes dominated the premier episode as working girl Suzy, from Columbia, made plans to retire and marry a “beeg Hol lywood producer.” The other resi dents of the seedy hotel couldn’t de cide whether to warn Suzy that her fiance was a phony or let her have a fling while she could. Each star took turns stealing the show but they had a hard time fol lowing Stan Gottlieb as the old man screaming at the desk clerk that his room has become a towering in ferno’ when his Jimmy Dean saus ages explode and catch his hot plate on fire. The desk clerk wants to call the police but the hotel’s mother-dominated manager talks him out of it when he discovers the dead customer is his step-father. They decide to move the body to a handball court where it will be as sumed that he ‘died with dignity.’ The second episode also intro duced an unseen character called Moose, a 26 year old ex-marine — still in diapers — who runs amuck in the hallways, smearing everything with butter and cantaloupe.
