Bell lawyers want delay, request change of venue SAN ANTONIO (AP) — South western Bell Telephone Co. lawyers gained Monday a delay in trial of a $29.2 million damage suit against it in state district court. Judge James C. Onion set trial for May 12 during a pretrial hearing. Lawyers for ousted Bell executive James H. Ashley and the family ofT. O. Gravitt, who headed Bell’s Texas operations before committing suicide last October, had sought a trial date in March. However, Bell’s head counsel, Hubert Green, said a March hear ing would be “premature.” “There is no reason why the tele phone company would want to drag out this case,” Green said. “But we cannot properly and promptly dis pose of it” Green said other investigations arising from the suit, including those by the Securities and Ex change Commission, a federal grand jury, the state attorney general s office and a state legisla tive investigation, hampered Bell lawyers from preparing. Green said also that extensive news coverage should be allowed to subside so as not to be prejudicial to Bell.
