Page 4 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1975 Experience preferred A teacher’s record from the pro fessional world may mean more to students than his or her appearance, according to research findings. James McNamara of the TAMU Educational Administration De partment tested students from a professional school at the University of Oregon and found they were im pressed more by practical experi ence than physical appearance. He presented film skits of two “applicants” for a teaching position. One was modishly dressed with longer hair and turtleneck sweater while the other was traditionally at tired in coat and tie. Each applicant was then given two vitas — one listing a career in teaching as soon as he graduated from college and the other listing several professional jobs away from the campus. McNamara said that the students voted the wide-based work experi ence more acceptable, even though one group saw it in conjunction with the traditionally dressed applicant and another group saw it along with the modishly attired man. Interestingly, said McNamara, the term “nontraditional was at tached to both men who had the professional job background, even though one appeared to be tradi tional in dress and manner.
