The Ags will take on Texas Tech in the 7:30 moonlighter before an expected sellout crowd. The Ags are trying to keep their conference record unblemished at 2-0 and retain their 2 game overall lead. The Red Raiders, however, have other ideas. They lost one to the hotter Razorbaeks but rebounded from a 26-20 halftime deficit to nip Texas 59-57 on a block and basket at the buzzer by William Johnson. Together with the Ags they are the pre-season co-favorites, and the game will probably be that tight. It will match the conference’s leading scorer against the toughest bench in the conference. Rick Bullock averaging about 22 points was held to 13 by Texas. But Johnson and Phil Bailey each hit 20 to keep Tech in the running. The Ags will counter with a bench that has nine players averaging more than four points, with two in double figures and one just tenths away. Nine players have also hit in double figures in one game or another, led by Sonny Parker’s high of 27. Cedric Joseph has scored a high of nine but has been hampered by a muscle pull. Brandt still with Dallas despite talk DALLAS (AP) — If Gil Brandt is leaving the Dallas Cowboys as player personnel director to join another National Football League club, the Atlanta Falcons, he was playing it cozy Monday. “Right now, my only job is with the Cowboys,’’ Brandt said. “I’m here and I don’t have any comment on other things.” Brandt was given permission two weeks ago to talk with Atlanta owner Rankin Smith about the general manager’s job. “At this time I have no comment other than about the Cowboys and the upcoming draft,” Brandt said. The Aggies strong point has been the bench and their increasing strength on the boards, long a Met calf trademark. Joseph, Jerry Mercer and Mike Williams have made tremendous progress of late and added to a still strengthening starting and backup group promise to make the group at least a contender and possibly the winner of tonight’s game. Lubbock is as tough a place to play basketball as College Station and the Ags had better be carrying an extra suitcase with a little luck in it. A&M and Tech always seem to play close games. Last year Tech won in Lubbock 63-61 while A&M won in College Station 98-95 in double overtime. The spread over the past two years has been a mere seven points in four games and the team totals are 302-301. And you can expect another thriller. It’ll be A&M versus Tech, a long flight, the Lubbock crowd, and the referees. Tech’s opponents will be the Ags and the referees. My choice? Either team by two. The game will be broadcast by Mike Mistovich on KTAM radio, 1240, beginning at 7:30. SWC Standings W L pet. Birden was instrumental in get ting Arkansas off to a 2-0 conference start with victories over Texas Tech and Southern Methodist. The Razorbaeks turned in their first vic tory in the last 12 starts against Tech, then followed it up with their first victory at SMU’s Moody Col iseum since 1968. The 6-foot-l junior from Pine Bluff hit both ends of a one-and-one with 23 seconds left last Tuesday night to give Arkansas a 63-60 lead over preseason favorite Tech and the Razorbaeks held on for a 65-62 decision. Against SMU Birden had a hot second-half hand that saw him hit eight straight baskets and two free throws in the final 13 minutes to keep the Razorbaeks ahead. During one stretch he hit two 15-footers and two 18-footers and he hit 10 of 14 from the field and scored 22 points. Birden joins Daryll Saulsberry and Kent Allison as Razorbaeks who have been named SWC players of the week, giving Arkansas three honors in the five weeks they have been bestowed. Texas Tech’s William Johnson and Rice’s Charles Daniels gave Birden stiff competition. Johnson scored 20 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time against Texas. He scored the tying basket, then blocked a Texas shot and scored the winning basket with four seconds to play. Daniels hiked his SWC scoring average to 24 points again and had four assists in Rice’s loss to Texas A&M. Texas A&M’s Sonny Parker hit 56.5 percent of his floor shots as the Aggies won a pair. Pokes get 19 choices in pro draft DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys will have 19 choices in the National Football League draft Tuesday, including the No. 2 selec tion, but Coach Tom Landry doesn’t see a superstar on the horizon like O. J. Simpson was the year he was taken out of South California by Buf falo. “There appear to he a number of players this year who are good bets to make it in the National Football League,” Landry said. “I don’t see a sure-fire superstar but there are probably more excellent players than in many past years.” Dallas is expected to take Randy White, Maryland’s All-American defensive lineman. The Cowboys dealt Craig Morton to the New York Giants on Oct. 22 and the Giants finished with a 2-12 record, tying Baltimore for the worst record among the 26 NFL clubs. Baltimore won a coin flip with the Cowboys for the first choice which was traded to Atlanta. Dallas needs running hack and linebacking help. “If we come to a point where three or four players are of equal ability,” said Landry, “then we will draft the man who plays a position we feel needs bolstering. Other wise, we’ll pick the best athlete.” 15% OFF On Purchase of $50.00 or Over 10% OFF On Purchase of $50.00 or Less FOR YOU AGS WITH YOUR STUDENT I.D. CASH PURCHASE ONLY Douglas Jewelry 212 N.
